Honda Civic Type R world debut

Civic type R 2007

honda.pngGeneva Motor show - The new Civic Type-R has been unleashed on Europe and we can only hope that it makes its way to the rest of the world. The car looks absolutely beautiful yet very aggressive, only the boot leaves something to be desired.

A naturally aspirated 2.0L DOHC i-VTEC engine turns out 197 horsepower to the front wheels. It's still being called a concept just like the SI unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show but it's likely this will be almost identical to the production version.

CIVIC TYPE R CONCEPT

Dynamic styling, exciting performance
Over 35,000 customers have been thrilled by the current Civic Type R – far more than originally forecast. A ‘CTR’ fan base has developed, and now enthusiasts from the UK, mainland Europe and Japan enjoy the raw, involving and exhilarating ‘super hatch’ Type R experience.

But while the previous model is a tough act to follow, the credentials of the Civic Type R Concept suggest the new 2007 car will attract a whole new wave of enthusiasts.

Bold and emotional styling is teamed with further development of the current Type R’s race-proven, high-revving DOHC i-VTEC engine.

200PS is delivered from the 2.0 litre motor without resorting to a turbocharger – part of what defines the current CTR and a feature that will equally define the character of its spiritual successor.
The promise is of a performance hatchback that will be as exciting to drive as it will be to look at when it goes on sale at the beginning of 2007.

A new 3-door version of the Civic, which shares DNA with this Type R Concept model, will go on sale in Europe later this year. It makes use of many of the styling themes that have brought such wide praise for the recently introduced Civic 5-door.

Civic Type R and the rest of the Civic 3-door range, will be exclusively built alongside the Civic 5-door range at the Honda of the UK Manufacturing (HUM) plant in Swindon.

Audi Advantage is no more

Audi s8
Audi.pngAudi of America is ending its free maintenance program beginning with the 2007 model year. The 'Audi Advantage', the four-year/50,000 mile maintenance program that was started in the late 1980's as a way to restore waining customer confidence and boost sales in the United States.

Dealers are of course huge fans of the Audi Advantage program and feel that it provides a edge to Audi dealers with only BMW offering a similar program. The reason for Audi getting rid of the program is because of the cost associated with it.

Mazda 3 begins production in China

Chinese Mazda 3
mazda.pngProduction of the Mazda 3 kicked off to day at the Changan Ford plant in Chongqing, China. The kickoff of Mazda3 production represents another significant step forward in the cooperation between the three partners in China.

Mazda3 sales will be conducted through FMSC, a joint venture company that Mazda set up in March 2005 with one of Mazda’s other partners in China, the First Auto Works (FAW) Group. Sales of the Mazda3 in China are scheduled to begin in the latter half of March 2006, with product and pricing details to be announced at a later date.

Kiyoshi Ozaki, senior managing executive officer in charge of Mazda’s China business strategy, said, “The Mazda3 has received worldwide acclaim and won 60 awards to date; it is a key global vehicle that represents the best of the Mazda brand. The Mazda3 is a very ‘Mazda’ car, embodying our fun to drive, Zoom-Zoom brand message, and we’re sure it will meet the expectations of our Chinese customers.” Ozaki continued, “We would not have been able to set up the production and sales infrastructure for the Mazda3 without the great cooperation of our valued partners in China, Changan and Ford, which we deeply appreciate.”

In 2005, Mazda began full business operations in production and sales with its business partners toward achieving its mid-term goal of producing and selling 300,000 units in the Chinese market in 2010. Mazda, Changan and Ford are also progressing with plans for a new joint venture vehicle assembly plant in Nanjing; production is scheduled to begin in 2007.

The new facility’s initial annual capacity is 160,000 vehicles, with preparations underway to produce Ford and Mazda-brand products. In addition, a new engine facility, named Changan Ford Mazda Engine Co. Ltd, is under construction with a preliminary annual capacity of 350,000 engines. Scheduled to be operational in 2007, the new engine facility will primarily supply Mazda and Ford-brand high performance engines to the nearby Nanjing assembly plant.

Mazda also enhanced and strengthened its sales network in March 2005 with the establishment of the FAW Mazda Motor Sales Co. Ltd. (FMSC), in Changchun, Jilin Province, with another important business partner in China, First Auto Works (FAW). Also, in June 2005, Mazda opened its Shanghai-based company, Mazda Motor (Shanghai) Business Management & Consulting Co. Ltd.—more commonly referred to as Mazda China Operations (MCO) to integrate its business operations in China. Also in Shanghai, the Mazda China Engineering Support Center was set up as a branch office in August 2005.

In 2005, Mazda brand vehicle sales rose 51 percent year-on-year, to 133,778 units, amidst an intensely competitive sales environment in China, greatly exceeding the total market demand increase of 26 percent. Mazda’s growth rate in China has exceeded the overall vehicle market growth ratio in China for four consecutive years. In 2006, the Hiroshima-based company aims to increase Mazda-brand vehicle sales in China by 10 percent over last year’s results.

Lotus APX prototype

Lotus APX
lotus.pngIt's good to see that Lotus is up to something else other then the Elise these days. The Lotus APX (Aluminium Performance Crossover) is a 7 seat four-wheel drive Crossover vehicle with a 300 hp supercharged V6 engine. The APX tips the scales at a mere 1570 kg.

The APX will have typical Lotus performance with a 5.4 second 0 - 100km/h and a top speed of 245 km/h (152 mph). This impressive performance for a Crossover will come from an engine that can deliver 8.7 liters / 100 km (32 mpg).

Read on for full details and more photos...

Lotus APX
APX is manufactured predominantly from aluminium in the form of high-pressure die-cast corner nodes, stampings and extrusions. It uses advanced assembly techniques, including adhesive bonding, self-piercing rivets and flow-drill screws for construction -- joining techniques that Lotus calls Riv-Bonding. Lotus has optimised the use of these technologies thus significantly reducing the number of mechanical fixings within the monocoque structure. This has reduced the level of investment required in manufacturing equipment.
Lotus APX
APX is not just a Lotus Engineering concept, but a feasible prototype close to production; it is not a concept indicating a strategic direction of Lotus Cars; it is, however, a brilliant demonstration of VVA and the skills of the team from Lotus Engineering into what is regarded as the future of niche vehicle manufacture. APX is production feasible as all the components can be made cost effectively and in high niche volume (up to around 30,000 per year).
Lotus APX
APX is powered by a V6 engine has been designed by Lotus Engineering's powertrain division. The directive for Project NEF was to produce a high performance prototype engine without the need to resort to exotic materials or manufacturing technology, allowing manufacture around the world.
Lotus APX
APX's engine is a supercharged 3 litre (2996 cc, Bore: 88 mm, stroke: 82.1 mm) V6 DOHC engine, mounted longitudinally in the front of the vehicle.

Performance of the engine is maximum power of 224 kW (300 hp, 304 PS) at 6250 rpm and a torque of 360 Nm at 4500 rpm.

Like the vehicle, the engine not just a Lotus Engineering concept, but a feasible prototype close to production, however it is not a concept indicating a strategic powertrain direction of Lotus Cars. The engine is production feasible and it is expected that the commercialisation of this engine will be of interest to the automotive clients of Lotus Engineering.

Simon Wood, Director of Lotus Engineering explains the rationale behind building APX: "the first production car from Lotus to use the Versatile Vehicle Architecture will be the new mid engine "super sportscar", which will go into production in 2008. Lotus Cars customers eagerly await this vehicle that will be a class-leading and phenomenally high performing car. However, we wanted to demonstrate the true versatility of the VVA technology, and what better way than to build a type of car that no one would expect from Lotus -- a 4-wheel drive "Crossover" vehicle. I am delighted with this vehicle and we believe that this technology and strategy is what the motor industry must follow to be able to produce niche vehicles efficiently and quickly.

Simon Wood continues; "There is already a great deal of interest in both APX and VVA technology from our client base and we will work hard to see how Lotus Engineering can help them with their strategic product solutions".

APX by Lotus Engineering in more detail

Background

At the Geneva International Motorshow 2005 Lotus Engineering showed the first example of a VVA understructure. This understructure is the basis for APX.

Traditionally OEMs seeking to gain competitive advantage through exciting niche vehicles have to either design a new platform or share one already available. Engineering a bespoke low-volume platform is an expensive, time-consuming solution, whilst sharing a mainstream chassis normally results in compromises in performance and design.

Lotus Versatile Vehicle Architecture (VVA) has been developed to bridge a gap in the investment-volume curve to exploit the benefits of producing at medium volumes but for niche markets, thereby giving the best chance of business case success and favourable returns.

The key to the VVA architecture is the high-pressure die cast corner nodes that are combined with bonding, mechanical fasteners, extruded and pressed aluminium. Lotus Engineering is a world leader in aluminium, steel and composite body engineering, joining techniques, and vehicle systems integration. The innovative VVA technology offers a fast-to-market, costeffective approach to differentiated niche products by spreading the development, investment and bill of materials burden across a range of niche vehicle variants, without the compromise that stems from conventional 'platform sharing'.

The philosophy is based on the commonality and versatility of key elements of the vehicle structure and body systems across a 'family' of niche vehicle variants, with a combined annual production rate of up to around 50,000 units. Structural components common to each family member are arranged in different configurations in each variant around the ingenious corner nodes.

The great advantage of this technology is that it can be used by one OEM looking to develop a range of niche products, or by a group of OEMs looking to share investment, but still retain a high degree of end product separation.

The Engine -- 300 hp, 3-litre V6

APX is a front engined and four wheel drive "Crossover" vehicle for occasional off road use. The V6 engine has been designed and developed by Lotus Engineering's powertrain division. The directive for the project was to produce a high performance prototype engine without the need to resort to exotic materials or manufacturing technology, allowing manufacture around the world.

The supercharged V6 is part of a family of normally aspirated and supercharged high performance engines which includes 2.2 litre and 3.0 litre normally aspirated derivatives. All of these engines are at the prototype stage and are production feasible, but are not currently planned for production.

The engine is production feasible and it is expected that the commercialisation of this engine will be of interest to the automotive clients of Lotus Engineering.

APX's engine is a supercharged 3 litre (2996 cc, Bore: 88 mm, stroke: 82.1 mm) V6 DOHC engine, mounted longitudinally in the front of the vehicle. It uses a Rootes-type supercharger with a compact air-to-water Laminova -- type charge cooler with separate parallel coolant system using its own water pump and heat exchangers allowing a charge temperature reduction of approximately 50 degrees Celcius.

Performance of the engine is maximum power of 224 kW (300 hp, 304 PS) at 6250 rpm and a torque of 360 Nm at 4500 rpm. 80% of peak torque is between 1500 rpm and maximum revs of 6500 rpm.

Like all products from Lotus, it follows the adage of "performance through light weight", in that the engine weighs just 171 kg (fully dressed, dry weight). This gives a phenomenal specific output of around 1.31 kW/kg (1.7 hp/kg). Specific performance is 74.6 kW / litre (100 hp / litre, 101.3 PS / litre).

This light weight comes from using cast lightweight aluminium alloy cylinder block (with thin wall iron liners), aluminium cylinder head, and an aluminium structural oilpan, able to support the front drive shafts. The oilpan also includes coolant and lubrication channels to the oil cooler and filter, and an electronic oil level and temperature sensor. Even the pistons are lightweight -- with each on weighing just 454 grams!

The construction of the V6 engine is arranged around the two banks of cylinders at an angle of 75 degrees with a compact cylinder offset of just 32.5 mm. This allows the engine to be compact, with good vibration characteristics, eliminating any requirement for balance shafts and the related extra cost, weight, height and complexity.

The Engine Management System uses a state of the art 32 bit ECU processor capable of over 200 million calculations per second. The ECU is Euro IV / E-OBD and LEV/OBDII compliant. And of course the engine satisfies the European End of Life Requirements (ELV) with respect to recyclability and recovery.

The V6 engine is an example of extensive research into "engine downsizing by Lotus Engineering's Powertrain Team. Engine downsizing is the concept of using advanced technologies to enable a small engine to produce the power and torque of a much larger engine, with the obvious reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. One of the key demands of the automotive industry is to produce engines with not only low emissions and high fuel economy but also extremely good performance. These two demands for performance and economy are not normally compatible unless there is a significant change in the engine development strategy.

Vehicle Structure

Prior to design release for the manufacture of this vehicle, the project was subject to industry standard engineering processes to ensure a quality product. Industry standard APQP processes have tracked and validated CAE (Computer Aided Engineering - Computer analysis

for strength, durability, crash performance, Vibration, Aerodynamics, Fluid Flow etc), NCAP targets for crash, pedestrian impact, torsion, bending and modal stiffness targets, full static and dynamic CATIA V5 DMU (Digital Mock Up - Digital build of the car to demonstrate the vehicle build and prove the fit of each part) to minimise build issues and the full suite of Material and Process simulation and validation to confirm manufacturing feasibility.

This coupled with tolerance analysis, full DFM/DFA (Design For Manufacture/Design For Assembly) and advanced joining technology research has been delivered in a true simultaneous engineering environment. The vehicle build proved very successful with only a handful of build concerns. A number of assembly validation builds were eliminated form the project saving both time and cost essential for niche vehicle projects needing 'Right First Time' design and engineering philosophies to overcome tight project constraints.

All significant components and structural items are made from Aluminium. This means that APX weighs in at a sector leading light weight of 1570 kg so even though it is not a Lotus car, it adheres rigidly to the fundamental core values of the Lotus brand of "Performance Through Light Weight". Of course lightweight structures are Lotus Engineering's forte and this is the industry recognised area where the greatest improvements in performance and fuel economy can be gained.

Understructure Construction

The understructure is riv-bonded aluminium, consisting of high-pressure die-castings, stampings and extrusions, and uses advanced assembly techniques, including adhesive bonding, self-piercing rivets and flow-drill screws for construction.

The self-piercing rivets are used in a similar way to spot welding on a conventional steel shell, with the flow-drill screws used for single-sided access on closed sections. Both suffice to hold the structure together during the adhesive cure cycle, and contribute to the performance of the structure during both static and dynamic impact conditions. The heat-cured high strength structural adhesive is the main joining medium, and used in combination with the mechanical fasteners, produces an immensely strong, durable joint and a lightweight shell with exceptional torsional stiffness.

The whole vehicle is 4697 mm long and 1852 mm wide. Wheel base is 2700 mm and track is 1554 mm (front) and 1556 mm (rear).

The Design

The brief for Lotus Design was to create a visually arresting "Jekyll and Hyde" car that fulfilled the needs of practical and flexible everyday transport but also provided the enthusiast with a focused driving machine. As with all crossover vehicles the solution is tailored to a specific niche buyer who will instantly identify with these unique attributes.

Russell Carr, Chief of Design for Lotus explains: "We saw the customer as a sportscar enthusiast who, with a typical family of 2 young children, occasionally wants to carry four or five adults in addition to their children. To facilitate this a third row of fold flat coupe style rear seats are accommodated within the cabin."

The flexibility of the VVA platform system enabled the Lotus Design Studio a rare opportunity to create a highly tailored solution that would meet, both, the complex requirements of the occupant and technical package as well as being aesthetically pleasing. The car has to look and feel like a sportscar but accommodate a 5 + 2 seating package.

Exterior Design

Russell Carr explains the exterior design philosophy: "We wanted the design to communicate the driving experience of the car, which is characterised by extreme power, performance and grip. Therefore the form language had to convey strength and velocity whilst looking planted to the road. As with all designs the essences of strength and movement are generated from stance and proportion which are, on this car, characterised by an extreme cab rearward, teardrop like silhouette and prominent wheel arches The illusion of speed is further communicated by a taught, fluid form language within which feature lines and surfaces stretch seamlessly from the penetrative nose to the boat - tail rear end. Power is re- enforced by a prominent hood line, similar to classic front engined sportscars, and flared arches, whilst strength is given by a deep bodyside and coupe style slim glasshouse."

Interior Design

The brief for the interior of the car was to create an environment with the visual drama of a sportscar but with a high degree of functionality and a contemporary sense of luxury. Russell Carr explains further: "We started by working with the engineering group to optimise the driving position and major controls. Then we created memorable features and controls that combine intuitive function with a unique design and high quality materials. This is evident in the design of the HVAC control, the start button and instrument pack. The latter communicates the cars sporting personality through a distinctive sports bike look which mixes analogue and digital displays within a high quality aluminium casing."

The digital screens of the instrument pack have multi-functionality enabling major data, including Satellite Navigation, to be placed logically in front of the driver. Great care was taken in developing the grains, textures and material finishes to ensure an ambience of sportiness and contemporary luxury.

"We continue to offer America 's Number 1 brand as well as America 's Number 1 value," says Chevy General Manager Ed Peper. "We're hearing from customers that they really like our strategy of bringing great vehicles to the market place at great prices."

Chevrolet announced its new pricing strategy during the North American International Auto Show in January, showcasing exceptional pricing on the all-new Tahoe — the first of the new Chevy full-size trucks.

"Chevy's goal is to bring expressive design and spirited performance combined with great value to its customers," Peper says. "We know consumers are looking for more features and standard equipment at competitive prices, and that's what we will offer."

Currently, the Chevy Suburban has no direct competitors. The vehicle is capable of hauling more passengers and cargo than any other vehicle in the segment - and offers a 360-degree safety system of occupant protection and crash-avoidance technology that demonstrates GM's commitment to providing world-class safety.

Led by strong full-size pickup and launch vehicle sales, Chevrolet was the best-selling vehicle brand in the United States in 2005. Chevy led the industry in total sales of sport utilities last year, with combined sales of 239,316 Tahoes and Suburbans. So far this year, Chevy full-size utilities sales are up 36.8 percent over last January and share is up 13.1 points. During January 2006, Tahoe and Suburban had a combined share of 50.7 percent, indicating that one out of every two full-size SUVs sales went to Chevy.

"More Americans buy Chevys than any other brand," Peper says, "and we intend to defend our sales position with a continued strong product assault in 2006, led by our new trucks."

Ford Bronco to compete with Scion?

ford bronco concept
ford.pngTo many the Ford Bronco is one of those vehciels that is an icon; it holds a special place in our heart. It's was an off road beast that offered all the toughness of a pickup truck but seating for four. When Ford unveiled the concept of the new Bronco in 2004 the public went wild for it begged Ford to build it.

Ford has now decided to bring this American icon back to production but the Bronco may have lost some of it's glory while it was in moth balls. According to Edmunds the Bronco will now be assembled in Mexico using engineering from Mazda and Ford of Europe.

Read on for more details...

The Bronco will be built on Ford's Fiesta subcompact chasis in an effort to cut costs. The factory where it will be assembled already produces several vehicles based on the Fiesta mechanicals. To top it off Ford is targeting $10,000 as a price for the Bronco to compete directly with Scion.

Doesn't quite seem like the Bronco of old does it! In related news Ford has already sold it's first 'new' Bronco to OJ Simpson; he ordered a white one.

Focus Coupe-Cabriolet
In typical Ford style, the operation of the hard-top roof is simplicity itself. The Focus Coupe-Cabriolet can be turned from an elegant coupe into a stylish cabriolet within seconds at the push of a button.

The car utilises a two-piece folding electric hardtop to go from snug family motoring to wind-in-the-hair excitement. It is a full four-seater, and will offer a substantial luggage compartment with more than 500 litres of useable space. This further underscores the vehicle's everyday usability and practicality.

The bold wheelarches familiar on all Ford Focus models give it a purposeful look, while the profile and rear views display a distinctly Italian design flavor with chrome details and a well-proportioned bootlid area.
Focus Coupe-Cabriolet

"The initial design intent of the Vignale Concept remained almost untouched during its transition to the production Focus Coupe-Cabriolet," said Chris Bird, Director Design, Ford of Europe. "The new Focus also provided us with a great starting point from which the design team could create a really distinctive dual-personality vehicle."

Inside, the emphasis is on refinement, and elegance and the use of premium quality materials. The preview model is trimmed with an attractive two-tone interior, with the upper instrument panel colored in the new, dark-elegant 'Iris' and contrasting to the trim and the luxurious leather seats in light 'Camel'.

In keeping with its status as a hero model in the Focus range, equipment levels will be comprehensive. Full details will be revealed closer to market launch, but the usual Focus refinements including air conditioning, multiple airbags, in-car entertainment options and a full complement of active and passive safety features will be standard. Customers will also be able to personalise their car to their own taste with an extensive list of color and trim options, plus a dedicated range of options and accessories.
Focus Coupe-Cabriolet

Feel the difference

Customers will literally feel the difference as the Focus Coupe-Cabriolet transforms. The change from one to the other is quick and easy. At the push of a button, the retractable two-piece hardtop folds backward and completely stows in the boot, inviting driver and passengers to enjoy the experience of fresh air at every opportunity.

But the two-piece retractable hardtop not only provides shelter from inclement weather. The hardtop gives the Focus Coupe-Cabriolet a bold and distinctive profile as a two-door coupe, and has been constructed to be durable for smooth, easy operation and long-term reliability. The solidity of the hard-top gives the car extra rigidity, essential for a car of this class.
Focus Coupe-Cabriolet
"Focus Coupe-Cabriolet is designed as a Grand Tourer, rather than a pure sports roadster", said Jon Wellsman, Ford of Europe's Brand Manager for Ford Focus. "As you would expect from a Ford Focus, it will be great to drive both as a coupe, and as a cabriolet." The Focus has earned accolades as one of the best handling cars in its class, setting the standards by which C class cars are judged. The Coupe-Cabriolet will be no exception, and has been developed to be as agile, convenient, and reliable as the Ford Focus name implies.

The new Ford Focus Coupe-Cabriolet will be offered with a choice of three powertrains: two petrol engines, the 100 PS 1.6-litre Duratec and the 145 PS 2.0-litre Duratec, and the latest generation 136 PS 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel. These efficient Ford powertrains combine economy and ecology, with their low fuel consumption and low emissions.

Full technical details of the Focus Coupe-Cabriolet will be announced closer to market launch later in 2006.

Ford with Italian flavor

The new Ford Focus Coupe-Cabriolet has been developed in cooperation with renowned Italian vehicle design, engineering, and manufacturing company Pininfarina S.p.A.

Following the confirmation in November 2004 that Ford of Europe would progress the Focus Vignale Concept through to a production model, the company selected Pininfarina as the ideal partner to work with on the programme.

The co-operation with Pininfarina continues through the manufacturing process, as all Focus Coupe-Cabriolet production vehicles will be built at Pininfarina's manufacturing plants Grugliasco and Bairo, both being located in the suburbs of Turin, Italy. Core Focus parts will be supplied to the plant by Ford's lead Focus manufacturing facility in Saarlouis, Germany.

"We are proud to be working again with Ford of Europe on the new Focus Coupe-Cabriolet, as it represents for us a significant investment, not just in terms of our design and engineering expertise, but also in our ongoing relationship with Ford of Europe, and the deployment of our high quality manufacturing facility in Italy," said Andrea Pininfarina, Chief Executive Officer of Pininfarina S.p.A.

Ford Focus model range grows

The addition of the new Coupe-Cabriolet model extends the Ford Focus range, offering customers a superb choice. Focus now offers three-door and five-door hatchbacks, a four-door sedan and a five-door wagon, plus the new Coupe-Cabriolet and the Ford Focus C-MAX multi-activity vehicle. The range also includes the recently launched Focus ST performance model.

The Ford Focus is one of the most successful model ranges in Europe with more than four million units built, not including 370,000 Focus C-MAX models built since its launch in 2003. The Focus, which enjoyed European sales of 442, 000 units in 2005, is produced at European assembly plants in Saarlouis in Germany, Valencia in Spain and St Petersburg in Russia.

The new Ford Focus Coupe-Cabriolet will go on sale across Europe from later this summer. It is estimated that approximately 20,000 vehicles will be produced a year.

GTO is G-O-N-E

pontiac gto
General Motors today told Pontiac dealers that it will discontinue the GTO coupe at the end of this model year. GM will make the last deliveries of the vehicle to dealers by the end of September, sources close to Pontiac say.

Sources say GM will produce 10,000 to 12,000 more GTOs before dropping the nameplate. Last year, Pontiac sold 11,590 GTOs compared to 2004 when it sold 13,569 a 14.6 percent drop.

When Pontiac launched the GTO in 2003, it projected 18,000 annual sales. The vehicle was criticized for bland styling, and some fans of the original GTO complained that it lacked nostalgic styling cues. It was restyled in 2004 with hood scoops, dual exhausts, and a bump in horsepower but sales have still slacked.

“There are some changes in the federal regulatory standards. One is an airbag deployment standard that would require some very expensive re-engineering of the car,” says Jim Hopson, Pontiac spokesman. “Since the architecture of this car is being phased out around the world it’s not economically feasible to continue this car.”

Pontiac will continue to build the GTO in Australia through the end of May, Hopson says. The last “boatload will hit the ground in June”, he adds.

The GTO is built on a rear-wheel drive architecture from GM's Holden division in Australia. The present model is going out of production as GM constructs the new Zeta RWD architecture, says the source.

There is no replacement coupe planned at this time and because of the strong Australian and weak U.S. dollar, the GTO had to be priced thousands over where GM originally wanted it -- in the mid-twenties, the source says. "It never did as much volume as we had hoped," the source says.

Pontiac is considering a replacement in the lineup for a RWD performance vehicle, but does not have anything to announce yet, Hopson says.

The GTO suggested retail price starts at $31,990, including shipping. One GM source says, "the 2005 and 2006 were pretty well sold out, and sales were especially strong in areas of GM weakness, like Southern California. It's a shame it has to go -- for now."

FORD S-MAX AND FORD GALAXY DEBUT AT GENEVA SHOW

Ford S-Max
Ford today announced the arrival of two all-new interpretations of the modern people carrier. The sporty new Ford S-MAX and the spacious new Ford Galaxy are being launched at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show and go on sale in June 2006.

While the new generation Ford Galaxy takes the attributes of flexibility, spaciousness, and safe and comfortable driving to new levels, while the Ford S-MAX is designed to take Ford into a new market sector.

Both models have been designed and developed in-house by Ford of Europe, and will be built at the company's Genk Assembly Plant in Belgium . For the Galaxy, this marks a major departure from the previous joint-venture model.

While the new Galaxy generation adds a dynamic angle to the vehicle's space credentials, the crossover S-MAX clearly expresses more sporty ambitions.

Galaxy and S-MAX innovations

New Ford Galaxy and S-MAX feature a wide array of intelligent innovations, many of them new to Ford, and many designed to provide superior levels of passive and active safety.

Both offer a new Active Suspension System with Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD) and Adaptive Cruise Control with Forward Alert. An all-new driver's knee airbag also debuts, along with a permanent Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and an active Collision Mitigation System. Also, in keeping with Ford's no-compromise approach to safety and the evolving EU legislative requirements, measures have been taken to deliver an increased level of pedestrian protection.

Galaxy and S-MAX: space

New Ford S-MAX and Ford Galaxy are vehicles that take functionality and flexibility to new heights.

Both new models feature the Ford FoldFlatSystem (FFS). Easily moving and individually folding second and third row seats bring new levels of flexibility and modularity to the class. All seats remain on board, but can be folded down to form a flat and even load floor almost as big – 2.0 metres by 1.15 metres – as a comfortable bed.

Both cars can be specified with a large panorama glass roof, and the Galaxy also offers an overhead console to enhance the "first-class travel" experience. New Ford S-MAX and Galaxy also offer an optional sliding load floor to help owners take advantage of its spaciousness for an active lifestyle and easy loading.

Galaxy and S-MAX: ride and handling

Ford created the new S-MAX and its Galaxy with recognisable Ford dynamics yet key differences in their driving characteristics. Each features Ford's signature expertise in ride and handling – now summarised under the new title Ford PrecisionDrive.

Galaxy's suspension, offering more than 200mm of spring travel, is tuned for a much more relaxed ride. The new S-MAX explores the sporty side of Ford's driving dynamics, while giving away only 10mm of the Galaxy's overall available jounce travel.

The sportier S-MAX offers more precise ride and handling, and shows excellent performance and controllable load-change reactions. The new platform's optimised geometry provides a high level of torsional rigidity, which adds to the car-like dynamic behaviour.

Both models can also be specified with Ford's optional new active suspension system with Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD). Ford's new CCD technology effectively provides adaptive damping by rapid damper valve control. This means that each damper valve can be adjusted almost every two tenths of a second to guarantee the best interaction between comfort and road contact. Heave, pitch and roll of the vehicle are controlled by the system, improving handling and stability.

Galaxy and S-MAX: safety

Ford has equipped both all-new models with an array of active and passive safety features. The safety story begins with a solid foundation – an ultra-stiff body structure that reduces the deformation of the passenger safety cell.

New safety systems introduced in the Ford S-MAX and Galaxy include Interactive Vehicle Dynamics Control (IVDC), and an all-new active suspension system which integrates:

* Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD) to improve suspension performance and comfort in all road conditions and interact with the vehicle's ESP for better dynamic vehicle behaviour
* Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Forward Alert (FA) and Collision Mitigation by Braking – driver aids based on radar distance control
* Hill-Launch-Assist (HLA), which allows the driver to release the brake pedal and to step on the accelerator pedal without the vehicle rolling backwards
* Ford's new Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Engines:

2.5-litre Duratec petrol engine for S-MAX
For customers looking for performance to match S-MAX's dynamic looks, this high-powered five-cylinder turbo engine offers 220PS and peak torque of 320Nm over a wide range from 1,500 to 4,800rpm. It will be mated to a new Ford Durashift six-speed manual transmission.

2.0-litre Duratec HE petrol engine
This 16-valve, four-cylinder powerplant is available in both the Galaxy and the S-MAX, offering 145PS and peak torque of 190Nm. The powerful Duratec HE petrol 16-valve engine is lightweight and compact, matched with Ford's proven MTX-75 Durashift five-speed manual transmission. Continued.

Duratorq TDCi 1.8-litre diesel engine
This proven turbo-charged Ford common-rail diesel engine is available for both Galaxy and the S-MAX. It offers 125PS and a steady state peak torque of 320Nm (340Nm under transient overboost). Also available in Galaxy only is a power-reduced 100PS version of the Duratorq TDCi diesel to suit the cost-of-ownership parameters driven by insurance and tax rates in certain markets . Two transmissions will be available on Galaxy, the Durashift MTX75 five-speed manual or the Durashift six-speed manual. The S-MAX will be available with the Durashift six-speed manual.

Duratorq TDCi 2.0-litre diesel engine
Available in both the Ford Galaxy and the S-MAX, this high-performance, 2.0-litre TDCi diesel offers 140PS and a peak torque of 320Nm (340Nm under transient overboost). It comes with Ford's Durashift six-speed manual transmission as standard.

In Summary

S-MAX's place in the Ford family
The all-new S-MAX significantly adds to the Ford of Europe product portfolio. Its seven-seat capacity is incredibly versatile, while the engine choice, which now includes the 2.5-litre, five-cylinder turbo unit from the Ford Focus ST , signals its sporty driving character.

Galaxy's place in the Ford family
With the all-new Galaxy, Ford truly adds a flagship to its product portfolio. New Galaxy's striking body design, derived from Ford's kinetic design language, displays the same futuristic modernism as its sporty sibling, the Ford S-MAX. Yet it makes a statement more geared towards comfort and quality, building on the first-class credentials of its predecessor.

Ford being Sued for Offering Severance Pay

lawyers
As if Ford isn't having enough issues at the moment they are now getting sued for not complying with Federal law in seeking a release of liability from 4,000 employees selected for termination as part of Ford's restructuring plan.

Under Ford's restructuring plan, employees are offered up to nine months of additional severance pay if they agree to release their claims against the company. The charge filed with the EEOC, however, alleges that the company did not comply with the Older Workers Benefit Protection Act, because the affected employees were not provided a listing by age and job title of each person who was selected for separation.

John Hergt, a partner in the law firm, explained that what Ford has done is to limit the information provided to employees so that they are unable to determine whether or not there is a pattern of selecting older workers for separation.

In some cases, Mr. Hergt states that the individual is provided a listing which lists only one person selected for separation, despite the fact that thousands of employees have been terminated. Limiting the information in such a way, "does not comply with at least two Federal Court decisions that have held that a company must provide a listing of all persons selected," Mr. Hergt said.

There is still time for Ford to comply with the law and expand the information contained in the lists given to terminated workers, Mr. Huizenga said. If the company fails to do so, it runs the risk that employees who sign the agreement may retain the money they received and file a lawsuit in Federal Court for age discrimination under the Federal Act. Mr. Huizenga has previously obtained a landmark ruling in the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed by the United States Supreme Court finding that releases given to employees by the Ameritech Corporation were invalid.

This is an important issue, Mr. Hergt explained, "because it is likely that many people will sign the release ignorant of the facts, and will not explore their legal rights."

Mazda will lease Hydrogen RX-8

Mazda RX-8 RE
Mazda announced today that they had recieved permission from the Japanese goverment to begin leasing the RX-8 Hydrogen RE to its first customers.

Like the standard RX-8 this hydrogen model is powered by a rotary engine but features a dual-fuel system that allows the driver to select either hydrogen or gasoline with the flick of a switch. Delivery of the RX-8 RE is slated for late March of 2006

Employing a dual-fuel system, the Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE can run on either high-pressure hydrogen gas or gasoline. This combination offers excellent convenience because it can be driven in remote areas where hydrogen fueling stations are not readily available, easing driver concerns about running out of fuel. In addition, this system boasts great environmental friendliness—zero emission of carbon dioxide (CO 2) gas and near zero nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission when fueled by hydrogen—together with the natural driving feel of an internal combustion engine. It uses engine parts and production facilities that already exist in Mazda's inventory, so this innovative engine can be built with a high degree of reliability at a relatively low cost.

McLarens first road car goes on auction

McLaren M6 Gt
Race car driver and automotive engineer Bruce McLaren dream of creating the world’s fastest road car became a reality with the McLaren F1 road car. But before the F1 there was the McLaren M6 GT of which only two examples were ever completed by the factory. The official Bruce McLaren Trust web site chronicles the history of the car which was modeled after the McLaren M6 CanAm monocoque sports racer. This car is credited with being the first car to use ground effects to develop negative pressure.

From an article on the McLaren International site, "On the day of the big test... we went all high-tech with a half-inch rubber tube taped to the bottom of the car leading to a pressure gauge which I was holding. I had crammed myself into the passenger seat and Bruce was barreling into the first corner at Goodwood... when the gauge suddenly registered negative pressure. I had rather hoped that Bruce would be concentrating on staying on the road, but he spotted the change on the gauge and started whooping and shouting and laughing and banging my arm. We'd cracked it!"

McLaren M6 Gt

From the H&H Classic Auctions website:

Rising phoenix like from the ashes of a thwarted Group 5 'Le Mans' project, McLaren's first road car, the M6 GT, remains one of motoring history's great what ifs. Although, total period 'production' would only ever amount to three or four cars (sources differ on the exact number), it was evidently a concept very close to Bruce McLaren's heart (and no doubt partial inspiration for the company's later F1 hypercar). Essentially an enclosed version of the M6 aluminium monocoque chassis that had so dominated the 1967 Can-Am series, it promised sensational performance and excellent handling. Styled by Jim Clarke at Specialist Mouldings with input from Bruce McLaren and Gordon Coppuck, the resultant two-door coupe was stunning to look at if a little uncompromising to drive. Though, the Kiwi maestro's own car - OBH 500H - had progressed as far as door seals and seat padding by the time of his fatal Goodwood testing crash in June 1970. Still in the development phase, the M6 GT project perished with its figurehead. Inspired perhaps by OBH 500H's paddock appearance at the 1970 Brands Hatch Race of Champions meeting or its mythical exploits on the Surrey stretch of the A3 dual carriageway, half a dozen or so enthusiasts - including the vendor - have managed to successfully recreate their own versions over the past thirty-odd years.
Using the 'same recipe' as the original, this accurate recreation is based around a genuine McLaren M6B chassis that was imported from North America in 1989 where it had lain undisturbed but with "some of its corners missing" for several years. A real find (sub-contractors Trojan made just twenty-eight 'B' versions of the M6 works racers for customer use), it was suitably repaired prior to being fitted with a 5.7 litre Chevrolet V8 engine and close ratio five-speed ZF manual gearbox. As luck would have it, Specialised Mouldings had not only retained the M6's original moulds but were happy to both refurbish them and then finish the resultant glassfibre panels to 'road car' standards. Still a long process, the rebuild / recreation took three years. Once finished, however, the seller reports that "the completed car was shown to Charles Agg of McLaren by Trojan for verification purposes. He was unable to throw any light on the origin of the Tub but was happy that whatever its origin it was sound and correct and he was able to assign a post period M6 chassis number to the car which facilitated the initial road registration of MWV 96J".
McLaren M6 Gt

Classified by the DVLA as a 'historic vehicle', this fabulous McLaren has since acquired the numberplate '2 GLA' (that for years lived on a family Porsche and which the current owner would like to retain if the car sells abroad). Unlike the original M6 GTs and indeed some of the other M6B GT recreations, this example has two crucial advantages. The first is the installation of air conditioning to combat the greenhouse effect engendered by the vast Triplex-supplied windscreen, while the second is a wheel conversion. Where the 'factory' cars ran a racing biased set-up with ten-inch wheels at the front and seventeen-inch wheels at the rear, 2 GLA rides on four sixteen-inch rims. The work of ex-Reg Parnell F1 team mechanic Jimmy Potton, this evolutionary measure necessitated various modifications to the all-round independent double wishbone coil-over suspension and disc brakes.

First invited to the highly prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed as part of the Mulberry Challenge in 1996 (during which saw it tackled the hillclimb course, performed a twenty-minute high speed trial round the circuit and competed in a timed autotest / wheel change with credible results), 2 GLA made a return visit eight years later to play a starring role in Cartier sponsored Style et Luxe display.

Finished in red with tan leather upholstery and brown carpets, the McLaren is described by the vendor as being in good condition with regard to its engine, transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Recently treated to further fettling at the hands of Specialised Moulding's Clive Robinson, the 'Big Mac' was found to weigh a surprisingly light / race friendly 1,000kg. This lack of mass helps explain (a) its savage performance (Racing Line magazine guessed it capable of 180mph / 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds in their February 2001 issue) and (b) how it came to be used as a camera car for shoots involving both the McLaren and Benetton F1 teams.

Fully street legal, this wonderful machine even incorporates hatches in its rear wheel arches that will accommodate "reasonably sized soft bags in each side for weekends away etc". Now sporting circular rear lights in place of the initial rectangular units, it is worth noting that the last real M6 GT to sell made an astounding $423,500 (ú237,000) in January 2006. Offered at a fraction of that price (and indeed at a relatively modest percentage of its build cost), this McLaren M6B based recreation looks to be both good value and enormous fun. Twice featured in 'Racing Line' the TAG-McLaren group magazine (January 2000, February 2001), it has also graced the pages of the Danish Bilen Motor & Sport publication (as part of a three way test with a McLaren F1 and Ferrari F40).

Chicago, Feb 8, 2006 -

Chrysler Group's Street and Racing Technology (SRT) group will take the SRT4 reputation to new heights with the introduction of the all-new, 300-horsepower 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4.

"The all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 achieves the SRT mission of offering benchmark performance for the best price," said George Murphy, Senior Vice President – Global Marketing, Chrysler Group. "With 300 horsepower under the hood, the Dodge Caliber SRT4 will dominate the sport-compact market."

With true tuner performance right out of the box and a great price, enthusiasts immediately took to the original SRT4, which was introduced in 2003 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. In the 2003-2005 model years, more than 25,000 Dodge SRT4s were sold.

"We couldn’t wait to infuse Dodge Caliber with the SRT formula," said Murphy. "The all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 delivers a strong dose of all-around performance while delivering more than 28 miles per gallon on the highway. Our new SRT pocket rocket is going to be a hoot to drive."

Street and Racing Technology
Since its inception in 2002, SRT has introduced 12 extreme-performance vehicles, including the Viper-powered Dodge Ram SRT10 regular cab and Quad Cab TM , Chrysler Crossfire SRT6 Coupe and Roadster, Chrysler 300C SRT8, Dodge Magnum SRT8, Dodge Charger SRT8, Dodge Viper SRT10 Convertible and Coupe and Jeep® Grand Cherokee SRT8.

Every SRT vehicle showcases five key aspects: exterior styling that resonates with the brand image; race-inspired interiors; world-class ride and handling characteristics across a dynamic range; benchmark braking; and standout powertrain.

The all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4's formula begins with powertrain, essentially explained by four numbers: 85, 125, 300 and 260. The 85 is how much more horsepower than the original Dodge SRT4 is available, which results in 125 horsepower per liter for a total of 300 horsepower. The final number is 260, as in 260 lb.-ft. of tire-smoking, push-back-in-your-seat torque.

Standout Powertrain
The all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 is capable of a 0-60 mph time in under six seconds. How is that possible?

The all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber gets its motivation from an all-new "World Engine" produced at the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA) facility in Dundee, Mich. The World Engine is a family of small fuel- and emissions-efficient aluminum four-cylinder gasoline engines co-developed by DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler Group, Hyundai Motor Company and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation.

"The all-new 2.4-liter turbocharged World Engine delivers a level of power you'd expect from a V-8," said Pete Gladysz, Senior Manager – Powertrain, SRT. "With the engine in the all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4, we were able to take advantage of tried-and-true performance improvements, such as increased cylinder-head flow and higher compression ratio, as well as newer technologies such as Variable Valve Timing (VVT)."

To achieve its high-performance Dodge Caliber SRT4 configuration, the aluminum 2.4-liter World Engine block is specially machined for increased water and oil flow. Unique cast pistons travel within iron cylinder liners, and are cooled by oil squirters and affixed to forged connecting rods for high-revving reliability.

Tri-metal bearings are used for the connecting rods and crankshaft for high-performance durability. A unique oil pump/balance shaft module keeps the reciprocating assembly well-lubricated and running smoothly. An external cooler keeps oil temperatures within a safe range.

The aluminum cylinder heads are also a World Engine casting equipped with unique high-temperature exhaust valves. VVT uses computer mapping to open and close intake and exhaust valves at optimal points for efficient combustion and flow. The camshaft and micro-alloy steel crankshaft, shared with the non-turbocharged 2.4-liter World Engine, are fully capable of high-horsepower loads.

Free-flow induction begins with an all-new air cleaner assembly that draws through an opening in a front crossmember for proximity to cool air. The air is then compressed in a TD04 turbocharger specially configured for the engine's inlet and outlet packaging requirements, and sent through an intercooler to a 57 mm throttle body.

Fuel is provided by a high-flow pump feeding injectors developed specifically for the 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4. An all-new engine management system designed by Siemens — the Global Powertrain Engine Controller — keeps the powerplant running at maximum efficiency and power.

On the exhaust side, spent gases exit through a free-flow system that features two catalytic converters — one immediately downstream from the turbo, and another further along the 3-inch single-pipe exhaust system. Using two catalytic converters in this way provides significantly better "light-off" for decreased emissions. As with the previous-generation Dodge SRT4, the exhaust is tuned for maximum performance while meeting federal noise regulations.

Power is transferred through a dual-mass flywheel to the six-speed manual transmission. The dual-mass flywheel consists of two flywheels sandwiching internal springs that are specially tuned to reduce noise and vibration. The GF DMT-6 six-speed transmission, equipped with a limited-slip differential for uniform side-to-side power transfer, is capable of handling up to 300 lb.-ft. of torque.

Torque is sent to the Dodge Caliber SRT4's wheels through equal-length halfshafts sourced from Chrysler Group mid-size cars for their larger size and power-handling capability.

Functional, Performance-oriented Exterior Design
Because there is only one chance to make a first impression, the all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 makes the most of it with muscular exterior styling.

"From the very first sketches of the all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4, we wanted an aggressive, SRT-signature look," said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President – Design. "For example, because the intercooler is positioned so high behind the front grille, we moved the fascia slightly forward and extended the walls of the grille. The result is a much more aggressive look than the standard Dodge Caliber."

An all-new front fascia below the signature Dodge crosshair grille incorporates functional performance features including ducts that direct air to cool the brakes and a wide center inlet that provides air flow to the radiator. Fog lamps are also set into the fascia, alongside brake ducts. The 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4's hood incorporates a functional scoop that brings cooling air into the engine compartment and a pair of extractors that exhaust hot air.

"Exterior design that works as well as it looks is a requirement for all SRT vehicles," said Creed. "The hood design had to include the functionality of bringing cool air in and getting hot air out."

The lowest portion of the 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4's fascia, which acts as an air dam to direct air around the front of the vehicle, wraps around to visually integrate with the radiused wheel wells and lower side-sill moldings.

The rear fascia continues the muscular, functional character of SRT vehicles, with lower vertical strakes that direct underbody air flow out the back of the vehicle, contributing to more stability at speed. A single, 3.5-inch exhaust tip exits from the right side of the fascia.

Aerodynamic efficiency is also aided by an integrated spoiler above the rear glass, which incorporates the Center High-mounted Stop Light (CHMSL). This spoiler, which is nearly 60 percent larger than that on the standard Dodge Caliber, is tuned for smoother air flow and downforce while maximizing the rear view.

Four exterior colors will be available on the all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4: Brilliant Black, Sunburst Orange, Bright Silver and Inferno Red.

Race-inspired Interior Appointments
In the "business office" of the all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4, a new interpretation of traditional SRT themes is carried out.

"The 2007 Dodge Caliber interior is unique with sophisticated and contemporary appointments," said Creed. "When we enhanced it with SRT cues, we followed design themes that had been successful with the previous Dodge SRT4, including the graphic design of the instruments, separate boost gauge, and silver finish on the center stack and interior trim.

"Overall, our strategy was to infuse the interior with performance-oriented enhancements to complement the Dodge Caliber SRT4's aggressive exterior," Creed added.

Unique SRT touches include sport seating with aggressive bolstering and performance fabric inserts to hold occupants during spirited driving, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with a "carbon fiber" pattern on the upper portion. The seats, steering wheel and leather shift boot feature contrasting stitching. Also unique to the 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 is an "alloy silver" finish on the instrument panel and shift bezel, and bright aluminum pedal pads that feature rubber studs for enhanced grip.

The center-stack-mounted shifter includes a lift ring to engage reverse, unique to the Dodge Caliber SRT4, as well as a leather-finished shift knob.

The instrument panel features three gauge "tunnels" outfitted with performance-oriented instrumentation, including a tachometer, 200-mph speedometer and water temperature and fuel gauges. A turbocharger boost gauge is located on the left side of the instrument panel.

For the enjoyment of audiophiles, the 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 is equipped with a standard AM-FM radio with a multi-disc CD changer control. An available SRT/Kicker high-performance audio system includes 13 speakers in seven locations, powered by a 322-watt amplifier and 100-watt subwoofer.

Two communication options are available on the 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4: UConnect TM Hands-free Communication System and SIRIUS Satellite Radio.

The UConnect system uses Bluetooth® technology to provide hands-free wireless communication between the customer's compatible cellular telephone and the vehicle's outboard receiver. Bluetooth is a short-range wireless networking technology that is used to connect two or more devices together.

SIRIUS provides 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 customers with more than 120 streams of the best music, entertainment and information, coast to coast. SIRIUS channels include 100 percent commercial-free music, the most play-by-play sports, world-class news, as well as talk, comedy, women's, family and kids' programming, traffic and weather.

The interior of the 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 is offered in Dark/Light Slate Gray.

World-class Ride and Handling
Another hallmark of SRT's balanced approach to performance is ride and handling characteristics that make a smooth transition from street to track.

The all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 rides on SRT-unique 19-inch cast aluminum wheels with 225/45R19 W-rated Goodyear tires. Wheel hubs and bearings on all four corners are adapted from Chrysler Group mid-size cars for strength.

Upgrades to the standard 2007 Dodge Caliber's MacPherson strut front suspension include new suspension knuckles and tuned dampers with revised spring rates. Unique front and rear sway bars keep body roll to a minimum during hard cornering.

The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) is uniquely calibrated for the 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 to provide excellent directional stability in all driving modes. In addition, stability is enhanced with a ride height one-half inch lower than the standard 2007 Dodge Caliber.

Rack-and-pinion power steering is tuned to produce easier low-speed maneuvering, without compromising performance at speed. The overall steering ratio is 18.0:1.

Benchmark Braking
Benchmark braking is another ingredient in SRT's performance recipe.

Although it's a compact car, the 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 benefits from braking-system components designed for much larger, heavier cars. For example, front brake calipers were sourced from a premium brake system developed for the Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum and Dodge Charger, while rear calipers were sourced from Chrysler Group mid-size cars. However, all are painted in signature Dodge SRT red. Vented brake rotors for the 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 are 340 x 28 mm in front and 302 x 10 mm in the rear.

The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) was uniquely calibrated for the all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4's performance to maintain directional stability without wheel lockup.

Street- and Track-tested Quality
The all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 was designed and engineered under the Chrysler Development System (CDS), the comprehensive, coordinated and disciplined product-creation process that improves quality and speed-to-market while reducing costs and encouraging practical innovation in new vehicles.

CDS emphasizes systems engineering, design and up-front planning to avoid time-consuming and costly trial and error, or changes during the later phases of the product development cycle. With CDS, all product and process planning is completed and fully integrated before production tooling begins.

2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 development also encompasses actual conditions, both on the street and on the race track.

To simulate real-world conditions, the 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 will have logged nearly 2 million customer-equivalent road miles by the time vehicles begin appearing in dealerships.

To ensure its track-ready character, extensive durability testing of the Dodge Caliber SRT4 will take place at Firebird Raceway in Phoenix; Texas Motorsports Ranch in Ft. Worth, Texas; and Nelson Ledges in Garrettsville, Ohio.

Process, Productivity Key to Manufacturing Excellence
The all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4 is built at the Chrysler Group's Belvidere (Ill.) Assembly Plant on the same assembly line with the Dodge Caliber SE, SXT and R/T models.

Previously the home of the Dodge Neon, the plant recently underwent a multimillion-dollar upgrade to prepare for Caliber production.

A new body shop and other upgrades are part of a total program investment of $419 million that was announced in January 2005. The robotic body shop can build the Dodge Caliber SRT4, Caliber and potentially three other vehicles with no negative impact on production. Robots can make necessary tool changes automatically within cycle time, in about 45 seconds.

The 3.7 million-square-foot Belvidere Assembly Plant has approximately 1,700 employees represented by United Auto Worker's Union Locals 1268 and 1761. The plant began production of the Plymouth Fury and Dodge Monaco in 1965.

Dodge Brand
With a U.S. market share of approximately 7 percent, Dodge is Chrysler Group's best-selling brand and the fifth-largest nameplate in the U.S. automotive market. In 2005, Dodge sold more than 1.1 million vehicles. Dodge continues to lead the minivan market segment with a 19 percent U.S. market share and maintains a 16 percent share of the highly competitive truck market. In 2006, Dodge will enter key European volume segments.

Maserati will not run ALMS this year

Maserati MC12
Maserati who for the first time participated in the 2005 American Le Mans Series (ALMS) with the MC12 will not participate in this years ALMS races. Risi Competizione who helped campaign the Maserati MC12 last year hasn't made any official announcement nor has Maserati but a source within Maserati has revealed that the MC12 will not race in the 2006 ALMS series.

The MC12 was a controversial entry in 2005 due to it not meeting all of IMSA rules and having Aston Martin protest against it's inclusion in the series. As a penalty the car had 58kg of ballast on board and a massive rear wing which greatly hampered it performance. Sources told us that Maserati is pulling out of the race due to the restrictions placed on the car and the fact that the ALMS race tracks were not well suited for the MC12 which is better at long straight-aways then tight corners. In related news Risi Competizione did announce that they would be campaigning the Ferrari F430 in the American Le Mans Series for 2006, read on for the full press release.

Risi Competizione will campaign the new Ferrari F430GT in the American Le Mans Series’ (ALMS) GT2 class this year. This brand new race car, which replaces the Ferrari 360GT model that Risi Competizione used to such good effect to win the IMSA Cup as the top private team during 2003, is expected to be “very competitive” notes Risi Competizione’s eponymous Managing Director, Giuseppe Risi.

With the outgoing Ferrari 360GT, Risi Competizione also produced the first non-Porsche GT2 class win for more than 20 races during the 2004 ALMS series. Risi says that he has much to look forward to in 2006. “This new car looks very promising. Intense chassis development by Ferrari has resulted in greatly increased stiffness,” he said, “and the car features a new larger displacement engine design with more horsepower. I’m really looking forward to joining battle with a stellar list of GT2 competitors, including Porsche, BMW, and Lexus. The competition on track will be great for everyone: manufacturers, teams, drivers, fans, quite simply everyone. We expect to fly the Ferrari standard high this year.”
The ALMS GT2 class is set to be the hottest category in North American sportscar racing this year, with the factory-backed Porsche hordes under some serious pressure for the first time in two seasons. As well as the Risi Competizione Ferrari F430GT, there will be factory entries from another German arch track rival, BMW, while the Japanese carmaker Lexus, is also throwing its weight behind the GT2 class for the first time.

The ten-date 2006 American Le Mans Series will kick off with the Sebring 12 Hours on 15-18 March, one of most famous and evocative events on the global endurance racing calendar. Round two, the Lone Star Grand Prix on 11-13 May will take place in Houston, Texas. Six races over the summer: Mid Ohio (19-21 May), New England (29 Jun-1 Jul), Utah (13-15 Jul), Portland (20-22 Jul), Road America 500 (17-20 Aug), and Mosport (1-3 September) will follow before the series winds up at Road Atlanta for the prestigious 10-hour Petit Le Mans, on 27-30 September.

The season finale race will take place at Monterey in California on 19-21 October. “It looks a very exciting calendar” adds Risi, “everyone in really fired up for the challenge, and we are particularly looking forward to the race in Houston, our home turf.”

Plans for drivers and other specifics details about the team have not yet been released.

About Risi Competizione

February 9, 2006 – Chicago - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., unveiled the

all-new next-generation Tundra full-size pickup truck

at a press conference today at the 2006 Chicago Auto Show.
The Tundra was first introduced in 1999 as a 2000 model. Since then, it has won numerous awards and has been recognized for its value, quality and reliability. The completely redesigned 2007 Tundra will be bigger, more powerful and will offer new body and engine configurations.
2007 Toyota Tundra

"From bumper-to-bumper, under the hood and from the inside out the new Tundra is a true American truck that will set a new benchmark in the full-size truck segment," said Jim Lentz, TMS group vice president and general manager. "It will be aimed at the ‘True Trucker,' the true opinion leaders among full-size owners. True Truckers are highly credible because they use, punish, and demand the most out of the pickups they buy."
2007 Toyota Tundra

The expanded size and power of the new Tundra will be reflected in its ability to tow over 10,000 pounds. To achieve this towing capacity every major component was designed for maximum strength, durability and reliability over the long haul. This will be accomplished with an all-new 5.7-liter i-Force V8 engine manufactured at Toyota's Alabama engine plant. The V8 will be mated to a new heavy-duty six-speed automatic transmission. In addition to the new powertrain, Tundra will also come equipped with heavy-duty front disc brakes with four-piston calipers and vented rotors increased by nearly one and one-half inches, and standard rear disc brakes. High capacity cooling and electrical systems will help Tundra tow heavy loads through the toughest weather. Finally, Tundra will ride on a new rock-solid chassis platform with 30 percent higher tensile strength steel.
2007 Toyota Tundra

Development of the new Tundra was spearheaded by Toyota's U.S.-based facilities. Product planning began at TMS headquarters in Southern California. All engineering development was directed by the Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Styling, inside and out, was the work of Toyota's Calty Research and Design Centers in Newport Beach, California and Ann Arbor, Michigan. Finally, the new Tundra will be built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing in Princeton, Indiana and Toyota's new truck plant in San Antonio, Texas.
2007 Toyota Tundra

Tundra has been super-sized in every metric of comparison with the vehicle it replaces. Its all-new, full-size platform will feature a significantly expanded wheelbase and an increase of 10 inches in overall length. Tundra will also gain nearly five inches in height and will be four full inches wider than before, placing it among the segment leaders in overall size.
2007 Toyota Tundra

Buyers of the new Tundra will have a choice of three engines. In addition to the new 5.7-liter V8, the capable 4.0-liter V6 and the legendary 4.7-liter i-Force V8, both also built in Alabama, will be available.

The new Tundra will come in three cab configurations.

It will retain its three-grade strategy with the Base, SR5 and well-appointed Limited trim levels. In all, Tundra will be offered in more than 30 different models, nearly double the current generation.

Calty designers set out to complement the new Tundra's increased size by creating a design with bold, brave and distinctive character lines that are different from anything on the road today. From the front, the new Tundra features a bold front grille, strong bumper and large headlights with a steely glare, conveying a strong and powerful physical presence. The profile reveals a thicker body and taller doors with character lines and fender flares that add dimension and strength as well as an unwavering stance.

Tundra's powerful and rugged exterior styling characteristics extend to the inside. A "command and control" center provides an unobstructed view of the instrument panel and puts knobs, switches and buttons within close reach of the driver.
All Tundra models will feature a class-leading, roomy passenger cabin providing front passengers with four inches more shoulder room. Two-row models will offer rear passengers nearly three inches more shoulder. Front passengers will receive nearly four more inches of hip room while rear passengers will enjoy six inches of additional hip room. Interior storage capacity is increased with the addition of hidden storage compartments, second-row seats that double as work surfaces (two-row models only), and a larger center console box.

For buyers who use their Tundra as a work truck quick and easy access to the truck bed is essential. The new Tundra will feature a tailgate that can be opened and closed with just two fingers. Robust dampers on the hinges have been added to help cushion the tailgate when opening and also help reduce bouncing when driving with the tailgate down. Other design features with workers in mind include large door handles, inside and out, easy-to-turn HVAC knobs, and adjustable headrests, allowing drivers and passengers to ride to their next work site without having to remove protective gear such as hardhats or gloves.

Designers also had safety in mind with the addition of extra large side mirrors to provide a wide field of view, while reducing wind noise and image vibration, always important when towing precious cargo. Additionally, a trailer hitch will be integrated into the Tundra's frame for better stability when handling heavy loads.

The Tundra will be loaded with standard-equipped comfort and convenience features. An array of options and accessories will also be offered, such as a JBL premium audio system with Bluetooth telephone compatibility, 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and a wide-screen backup camera integrated into the tailgate handle for enhanced rear-view safety.

"As much as the new Tundra has changed, there are a few things that remain the same," said Jim Press TMS president and COO. "Tundra will again offer the most comfortable, quiet and refined ride in the full-size truck segment. Its build quality, reliability, and durability will, again, be second to none."

The all-new Tundra will arrive in dealer showrooms in early 2007.

Press Release: 2006 Dodge Rampage Concept Vehicle

The Only Things It Can't Load More Of Are Style and Versatility

Bold, powerful and supremely versatile, the new Dodge Rampage concept vehicle is a fresh look at how many families actually use the popular pickup trucks.

“It’s the truck for the non-traditional buyer,” said Scott Krugger, principal exterior designer. “This is a truck for the person who wants the functional aspects of a truck yet doesn’t want a traditional vehicle. The Rampage has the capability of a pickup without sacrificing occupant space.”

Combining the width of a Dodge Ram with the overall length of a Dodge Dakota, the Rampage features a host of people and cargo-carrying innovations made possible by a combination of unitized body construction, front-wheel drive, and unique independent rear wheel suspension. And as with any Dodge concept, the appearance is striking.

In order to achieve their twin objectives of a family-size passenger cabin and exceptional pickup utility, the designers dramatically reconfigured the proportions of the truck. The largest portion of the Rampage is devoted to the spacious passenger cabin, followed by the five-foot cargo box, and last, the engine compartment (which still accommodates a 5.7-liter MDS HEMI® under the abbreviated hood). To visually reinforce the fact that the majority of the vehicle is dedicated to passengers and cargo, a slim appliqué of brushed aluminum runs along the cowl, up and over the roof rails and around the top of the cargo box, a shimmering silver ribbon that contrasts dramatically with the Liquid Carbon exterior.

Up front, the Rampage exhibits a fresh interpretation of the Dodge truck style architecture – a new look for a new truck. The signature Dodge six-sided crossbar grille is set flush within a curving plane that encompasses rectangular wraparound headlamps. Featuring LED lighting, all exterior lamps rely on light-piping and both clear and frosted acrylic to achieve a cleaner look.

The body side is dominated by “double-muscle” flared fenders with the widest part of the body centered over the 22-inch brushed aluminum wheels. The framed doors feature a continuous fore-aft glass plane while the reverse-angle “pillar” on the rear door and distinctive triangular window give a sporty coupe-like profile.

To draw attention to the generous occupant space, a U-shaped chamfered element runs above the sill and travels up the body along the leading and trailing edges of the door sets. Accented with brushed aluminum, this detail is subtly repeated on the exterior door handles.

Access to the interior is exceptional. When either door is opened, the sill pivots down to expose a handy step assist. While the front door is hinged conventionally, the rear door slides open to reveal an imaginative and supremely practical interior, entry to which is enhanced by the absence of the customary B-pillar.

“The interior of the Rampage is durable, functional and efficient,” said Irina Zavatski, principal interior designer. “Everything is there for a reason.”

Structural elements are exposed. The contoured center stack, for example, “floats” above the surface of the instrument panel. Composed of satin silver finished “framing,” the center stack can be pulled rearward and rotated toward either driver or passenger to access the navigation, HVAC and entertainment functions. The free-standing instrument cluster has a similar look and moves with the adjustable steering column while the steering wheel spokes harmonize with both cluster and center stack.

Overhead a “ladder-type” front-to-rear console with storage and entertainment units incorporates distinctive mood lighting along its edges. Flanking the console are fore-aft “skylights,” bringing welcoming daylight to rear seat passengers as well as those up front.

“The seating is designed to be athletic, comfortable, yet rugged,” said Chris Welch, designer of the seats, which are contoured around specially-fabricated folding framing finished in satin silver. To facilitate ingress/egress to the rear compartment, milled silver handles are integrated into the outboard sides of the front seat backs. The dark charcoal seats are trimmed in a smooth polyurethane-coated material and a three-dimensional open texture “spacer knit” fabric which is also used as a non-glare covering on the instrument panel. Contrasting red-orange fabric on the seat inserts echoes similar accents on the instrument panel, steering wheel and door armrests.

With all seats in use, the Rampage is able to carry five passengers, but that’s just the beginning of its functionality. The right front seat and the 60/40 rear seats can be folded into the floor, marking the first use of Dodge’s popular and innovative Sto-N-Go™ Seating and Storage Unit in a pickup truck and the first Sto-N-Go front passenger seat ever.

The stowing process is facilitated by headrests that flip down into the seat backs, a solution that also allows taller-than-normal seat backs for greater support. To enhance the available interior volume with seats dropped into the floor, the armrests on the front and rear passenger doors also fold out of the way, maximizing the cabin’s cargo-carrying capacity. As with all Sto-N-Go seating, with the seats upright, the bins beneath become handy storage areas for sundry items.

Since the interior is designed to accommodate both people and cargo, a durable marine-type rubberized material is used for the cabin flooring.

Behind the rear seats the backlite retracts into a midgate which in turn folds down into the forward part of the cargo bed. With the both midgate and one or more of the passenger seats in a stored position, lengthier items can be carried without having to lower the tailgate.

After the midgate, the five-foot box offers many utility options, including retractable cargo hooks and built-in formations arranged to secure 2’x4’ boards. The three-position tailgate can be deployed upright, folded down 98 degrees, or dropped further to an angle of 117 degrees. In this position a stored-in-the-tailgate slide-out ramp can be extended to the ground to permit easy loading of wheeled cargo like motocross bikes, ATVs, etc.

And the unexpected features don’t stop there. Rampage delivers exceptional cargo carrying capacity above and below the dual-bed floor. Acting as a second tailgate, the rear bumper fascia also drops down to reveal an enclosed storage space extending (with the seats up) far enough forward to provide room enough to accommodate a stack of 4’x8’ plywood sheets.

“This is ‘clean storage,’” says Krugger, “something most pickups today don’t have.”

Combined with the Sto-N-Go seating in the cabin, these cargo box features give the owner -and his or her family – unrivaled flexibility sure to be appreciated, whether going to the store to buy materials for a weekend project or taking the family off on an outdoors outing. Another thoughtful touch: In order to keep the rear of the vehicle free of bothersome heat and fumes when accessing the dual cargo beds, the engine exhaust exits via specially-trimmed vents forward of the rear wheels.

“Bold, powerful and superbly capable in creative new ways, the Dodge Rampage concept vehicle offers a new vision for the American pickup truck and the active lifestyle people who drive them,” said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President – Design, Chrysler Group.

Ford to Create "Midwest Ethanol Corridor"

ethanol
Ford today announced its plans to help create an Ethanol Corridor in the Midwest by expandin E85 ethanol availability by approximately one-third in Illinois and Missouri this year. Through the company’s ongoing partnership with VeraSun Energy, a renewable energy company. Actions to increase the availability of ethanol in neighboring states are planned, as well.

Ford also announced that it is working with the city of Chicago to put hybrid vehicles into service as taxi cabs beginning in 2007, as part of a plan being considered today by the Chicago City Council. Ford is loaning the city an Escape Hybrid to serve as a training and education tool with taxi fleets and the public. The Ford Escape Hybrid will help taxi companies reduce fuel expenses while helping to improve the air quality in the city.

E85 ethanol is a fuel blend that contains 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. Ethanol is a completely renewable fuel that, in the U.S., is most commonly made from corn. Gasoline sold in the U.S. frequently contains up to 10 percent ethanol, but an increasing number of vehicles on the road today can operate on blends containing up to 85 percent ethanol. To date, approximately 500 of the more than 180,000 fuel stations in the United States currently offer E85 ethanol.

The first phase in the creation of the Midwest ethanol corridor is to convert approximately 40 existing gasoline fuel pumps in Illinois and Missouri to E85. The move will increase availability by approximately one-third this year. Ford estimates there are 50,000 owners of Ford flexible fuel vehicles (FFV) in Illinois and 28,000 in Missouri. Ford will work with fuel providers and officials in other states to further develop the Midwest ethanol corridor.

With the introduction of four new 2006 models that have the E85 option – including the Ford F-150 pickup, Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car – the company will produce up to 250,000 ethanol-capable vehicles in 2006.

Honda Announce New Civic Si Sedan

civic si sedan
Chicago Auto Show - Honda just announced a brand new Honda Civic Si sedan. For the first time in the history of the Si, Honda will be offering two different models one being a four door sedan. Prices are not set yet and this was still called a concept but at least 95% production. Horsepower will remain the same as the coupe as will suspension. The sedan Si will go on sale this fall.

More photos after the jump...

The Civic Si Sedan Concept provides strong hints of the styling and performance for a production Civic Si Sedan scheduled to go on sale this fall, marking the first time that "Si" performance has become available in the Civic Sedan. Similar to the recently introduced Civic Si Coupe, the production Civic Si Sedan will serve as another performance leader for the Civic line-up with a 197-horsepower, 16-valve, DOHC i-VTEC engine with an 8,000 rpm redline, mated to a close-ratio, 6-speed manual transmission. Helping to put all that power to the ground is a helical-type, limited slip differential for improved traction and cornering performance.

The Civic Si Sedan Concept features custom 18-inch cast aluminum alloy wheels, 225/40ZR18 high-performance tires, and 4-wheel disc brakes with large cross-drilled brake rotors and 4-piston Brembo calipers.

"The Civic Si Sedan Concept demonstrates how the high-performance attributes of the Civic Si Coupe can be directly applied to the functionality of a sedan," said John Mendel, senior vice president of American Honda.

A production vehicle based on the Civic Si Sedan Concept will go on sale this fall. The 2007 Civic Si Sedan will mark a further evolution of Civic Si's sixth generation alongside the Civic Si Coupe - and will be the first time a Civic Si is available in two body styles. The Civic Si first appeared in 1986 with subsequent Civic Si models appearing in 1989, 1992, 1999 and 2002.

2007 Lexus ES 350 has Arrived

2007 es350
Opening Day for the Chicago Auto Show has finally arrived and we’re fueled up on bad coffee and good doughnuts. Anyways the much anticipated Lexus ES 350 has made its official introduction in to the world. Will this be the car that knocks the 3 series BMW from its thrown? We'll even if it can't what a great looking car!

Featuring a 272 hp 3.5-liter V6 standar 6 speed auto and 25 mpg and 0 - 60 in 6.8 seconds! More details to come read on for full size phtotos!

Powerful Technology for New V6
The ES 350's 3.5-liter V6 engine delivers 272 horsepower and 254 lb.-ft. of torque, resulting in an estimated zero-to-60 mph time of 6.8 seconds, substantially quicker than the model it replaces. The highly sophisticated engine uses electronically controlled sequential fuel injection, which optimizes the fuel mixture and creates a precise burn, higher output and lower emissions to aid drivability. The result is a substantial improvement in engine efficiency with increased power and improved fuel economy.

The engine also benefits from reduced internal friction via chain-driven camshafts and roller-rocker arms that serve to increase efficiency. Aluminum heads and cylinder blocks feature special cast-in "spiny" cylinder liners to improve liner stability and cooling by increasing surface contact area with the cylinder head.

The new ES comes standard with dual exhaust, which reduces exhaust backpressure at high rpm. Extensive use of stainless steel in the exhaust system minimizes weight and improves durability. The integration of these technologies contributes to segment-leading efficiency with the ES 350 obtaining a manufacturer-estimated combined fuel consumption of 25 mpg (21 mpg city/30 mpg highway) and an expected Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle II (ULEV II) certification.

Six-Speed Transmission
The front-wheel drive ES 350 features a six-speed automatic Electronically Controlled Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i) and sequential shift. The low-friction, high-efficiency gear train is lighter and more compact than the previous generation 5-speed transmission with 20 percent fewer parts and 24 percent fewer hydraulic controls. Gear ratios are carefully matched to both engine horsepower and torque characteristics to provide very smooth yet responsive shifts for improved drivability.

New Intelligent Luxury
In addition to a new look and feel, the new ES also improves upon the increasingly complex nature of automotive technology. The ES offers numerous standard features such as SmartAccess keyless entry and a new push-to-start ignition system that allows drivers to enter and start the vehicle without removing the access fob from their pocket or purse.

Lexus' craftsmanship and renowned attention to detail provide true luxury by design. Dual-zone automatic climate control and 10-way power front seats, with available memory, highlight the front cabin. The supportive standard cloth seats are also available in leather and extra-soft upgraded perforated leather for additional comfort.

The three-spoke steering wheel features easy-to-use controls for the audio system, trip computer and multi-information display in the speedometer. It also adds a voice control switch for the available Bluetooth® navigation and features. An auto-dimming rearview mirror with an integrated digital compass is standard, as are heated exterior mirrors.

Additional standard luxury features include a sliding center console, a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, a one-touch power moonroof and an illuminated entry system that lights the exterior with puddle lamps and the interior cabin footwells.

Luxury extends to the smallest details in the new ES, from illuminated front cup holders to an interior LED soft-lighting system that provides just the right amount of light where driver and passengers need it most. And the ES lends extra peace of mind with the integrated Homelink® transmitter that can control a variety of compatible home security devices and systems.

Advanced Safety Features
New standard safety features include Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC), an electronic traction-control system that uses both throttle and brake intervention to help control wheel spin.

In addition, the new ES provides eight standard airbags; 10 with the optional rear-seat side airbags. For 2007, the ES gains new knee airbags for the driver and front passenger as well as a twin-chamber front passenger airbag. Side-curtain airbags coupled with front seat–mounted airbags and the optional rear-seat side airbags are designed to help offer additional crash energy management for the front and rear seat occupants.

The Supplemental Restraint System in the new ES also includes variable-force front airbags for both driver and front passenger. Sensors determine the severity of the accident and, in turn, the force with which to deploy the front airbags, helping to provide an appropriate level of occupant restraint. Rear-seat side airbags are offered optionally.

The ES 350 includes the safety of several visibility-enhancing technologies. The front side windows feature a water-repellant surface that helps to bead rainwater. A rear back-up camera, part of the available navigation package, is mounted near the top of the license plate surround and projects a color image of what the camera lens can detect behind the vehicle onto the navigation screen whenever the vehicle is in reverse.
In addition, the ES provides the first-ever intelligent Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) that allows both right and left front headlamp bulbs to swivel at the same time to help illuminate a turn or curve as the driver steers into it.

Luxury Alive in the Details
For the first time, Lexus offers an optional panorama glass roof on the ES 350 creating an expansive feeling of openness for interior passengers. The glass roof extends over the entire passenger cabin providing a fixed skylight for rear passengers and a sliding sunroof for front passengers. A manual interior shade is provided for the front and rear passenger compartments. The frameless design allows for significantly tighter gaps versus those provided by other manufacturers and, with no visible gaskets, contributes to its sleek appearance and efficient aerodynamics.

Optional ventilated front seats and an available power rear window sunshade work in concert with the standard dual-zone climate control that filters the air to keep occupants comfortable. A dual-zone automatic climate control allows driver and front passenger to customize interior temperatures, while rear passengers enjoy their own A/C vents.

The optional and newly upgraded fifth-generation navigation system offers eight million points of interest (POI). The multi-information display makes key information readily available and easy to see. These and other features available on the new ES, such as semi-aniline leather, High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps, intelligent Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS), Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, heated/ventilated front seats and the panorama glass roof are normally found only in more expensive luxury cars.

Mind-Expanding Audio Systems

An enhanced standard premium audio system brings an in-dash, six-disc CD-changer,
MP3 player, iPod connectivity and an additional speaker to the 2007 ES. The system also includes an Automatic Sound Levelizer (ASL) to maintain consistent sound levels at varying vehicle speeds.

Music aficionados will appreciate the newest generation of the optional Mark Levinson audio system in the new ES. Using a 7.1-channel speaker architecture, this leading-edge design uses 10 channels of amplification with a total of 300 watts at 0.1 percent Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) playing through 14 speakers to bring a major new dimension to automotive audio sound. The Mark Levinson audio also takes advantage of DVD audio and video technology, allowing users to play both conventional CDs and DVDs. DVD movies can be viewed on the color 7-inch touch screen when the vehicle is parked.

The all-new 2007 Lexus ES goes on sale late April.

GM board cuts dividend by 50%

general motors
Monday afternoon on the recommendation of newly appointed board member Jerry York, the General Motors board of directors elected to cut the dividend by 50 percent at it meeting on Monday.

The move was one recommended by billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian in a speech to analysts in January. GM's annual dividend is reportedly $1.1 billion, or $2 a share. The move, your argued, would help the company turn around and to show the UAW that all the segments of the company would suffer financially as GM rebuilds itself. General Motors has reported a net loss of $8.55 billion in 2005.

New Car Shoppers buying CPO Vehicles

used car
A new survey from Consumer Reports shows that certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicles are becoming an alternative for those looking to purchase a new car. According to the survey more then a third of the respondents who purchase a certified pre-owned vehicle said they had been considering both new and used vehicles. While five percent said they were looking for a new vehicle only but decided on a used CPO instead. 90 percent of the respondents that had purchased a CPO vehicle said they were either very or completely satisfied with their purchase.

53 percent of those surveyed said they could buy a more expensive vehicle for the money and that is why they choose a CPO car. While 51 percent stated that they preferred the lower price of the CPO car, compared to that of a new vehicle.

Almost all auto manufactures now have some sort of a CPO program they can very greatly as to what terms each vehicle is certified under. Do your homework to find the best CPO program to fit your needs and be wary of cars that are certified by dealers and not manufactures. These cars tend to have higher mileage, are less thoroughly inspected, and generally any warranty they might have will only be valid at the dealership that the car was purchased at.

IntelliChoice has a nice tool to compare manufactures CPO programs - Side by side comparison
AutoMart.com also has a chart to compare the certified programs - Compare Certified Programs

BMW Kicked from Google

bmw logoApparently BMW has been busted by Google for using less then ethical practice of using a "doorway page" on the bmw.de homepage. Doing this can influence search engine results by showing keyword-rich pages to boost how often BMW websites will appear to users.

Google considers this a very serious offense and has reacted by kicking BMW out of the Google index and has reduced it Page Rank to 0. BMW has removed the offending pages after the news broke but it was too late and the German BMW site is now suffering from the "Google death penalty": a ban from almost any top search result within the Google index. BMW has not responded about the incident.

Ford Drops GT and Lincoln LS

ford assembly line
Detroit News is reporting that Ford is going to be halting production of its very successful super car the Ford GT. Ford is saying that the GT is not being canceled but its just run its race. In 2005 Ford sold 1,302 of the $150,000 sports cars. Ford also said the upcoming Shelby GT500 will fill the void left by the GT. No date has been confirmed for the end of production but it will happen this year.

As part of the way forward plan Ford is also stopping production of the Lincoln LS and has canceled plans to build the Adrenaline which was a high-performance sport utility truck. The Wixom Assembly plant where the LS is built will close next year leaving only the Lincoln Town Car being assembled on site until then. The LS is being replaced by the new Lincoln Zephyr which shares a common architecture with the Ford Fusion. The loss of the two cars could eliminate up to 300 jobs from the Wixom plant.

Lexus.com has been judged by J.D. Power and Associates as the most useful automobile Web site for new-vehicle shopping. The study conducted twice a year, measures the usefulness of manufacturer Web sites during the new-vehicle shopping process. Sites are evaluated in four key areas: appearance, speed, navigation, and information/content. Rounding out the top 5 sites were 2nd: Pontiac 3rd: Suzuki 4th: Hummer and 5th place was BMW.

"Vehicle shoppers come to automotive sites with a wide range of shopping patterns, Internet skills, Internet connections, computer configurations, automotive understanding and automotive vocabulary," said Dennis Galbraith, senior director of digital marketing solutions at J.D. Power and Associates. "Creating one site that works well for so many new-vehicle shoppers is an extraordinary challenge, but Lexus has demonstrated that it can be done."

Volvo has released a video of the 2007 Volvo S80. The 30 second clip shows the car in action but has no sound, so you'll have to wait to hear what the new V8 and dual exhaust sounds like. The car does look absolutly beautiful going down the road! The 2007 S80 was announced Monday, you can see photos of it here or check out the Volvo S80 microsite that was just launched yesterday.

Ford's January U.S. Sales Increase 2 Percent

Ford Motor Company reported today that January U.S. sales have increased 2 percent compared to one year ago. The trend of car sales increasing and trucks decreasing has continued with cars gaining 18 percent and truck sales slipping by 7 percent. 2005 was the first time in 6 years that Ford had posted an increase of car sales. Car sales for Ford are being driven by its new mid-size sedans the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, and Lincoln Zephyr with the three models accounting for 14,714 sales in January up 25 percent from December. F-Series truck sales for January were up 7 percent to 52,771.

Could this be a sign already that Fords restructuring plan is working?

Lexus GS Earns Top Rating in Side Impact Test

Lexus logo
The Lexus GS has earned the Insurance Institue for Highway Safety's top rating in a side impact crash test. The test simulates a side impact from an SUV or pickup truck. Ratings for the Lexus GS frontal offset and rear impact tests were released earlier this month where it earned a good rating in the frontal test but scored poorly in the rear impact due to the seat/head restraint design. "The GS is one of three large luxury cars we've tested that earns the top rating for both front and side crash protection," says Institute president Adrian Lund. "But the GS isn't a 'Top Safety Pick' because of its marginal rating in the rear test. Only the Audi A6 earns that designation among the large luxury cars we've evaluated."
