Lexus LS Hybrid will make debut at New York Auto Show
Lexus will unveil its all-new LS luxury hybrid sedan next month at the New York International Automobile Show. Arriving next year, Lexus's hybrid version of the upcoming model-year 2007 LS sedan will introduce impressive new standards in styling, engineering, technology, safety and performance.
The hybrid version of the brand's fourth-generation flagship sedan will make its world premier at the auto show's first press conference at 9:25 a.m. on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 in the Galleria Ballroom of Jacob Javits Convention Center.
TAG Heuer SLR Watch

Perfection in function and wearer comfort
The power source of the “TAG Heuer SLR for Mercedes-Benz” is the calibre TH 17. It has an automatic winding mechanism operated by a central rotor as well as chronograph and date functions. To enhance its operational ergonomics, the chronograph push-pieces are arranged at an angle of 45 to the dial face instead of on the side of the case, placing them directly beside the outer bezel. TAG Heuer holds the patent on this watchmaking refinement. The dial has three subsidiary dials whose hands display the continuously measured small seconds, minutes and hours for the chronograph. A rhodium-plated ring enables the minutes and small seconds displays to stand out clearly from the black dial. Another special feature of the TAG Heuer SLR chronograph is the internal bezel with its 60-minute gradation. It can be rotated using the second crown beside the 9 o'clock position. This makes operations such as rapid countdown with the minutes hand possible. What makes this watch so comfortable to wear is the crocodile skin strap, cleverly integrated into the case. The SLR logo is engraved into the safety clasp as well as into the tachymeter scale. The words “Mercedes-Benz” appear on the dial below the 12 o'clock position, just above the emblematic TAG Heuer logo.
FORD, BARRETT-JACKSON TO AUCTION RARE FORD GT
One lucky bidder will leave this weekend's Barrett-Jackson Palm Peach auction with a very rare Ford supercar - and the satisfaction of helping seriously ill children.
Ford Motor Company is teaming up with auto legend Carroll Shelby in auctioning off a rare Ford GT to benefit the Carroll Shelby Children's Foundation. Up for auction is the early-built 2005 Ford GT VIN 00003, which originally was produced for marketing events and auto shows.
The Ford GT supercar's base MSRP is $151,245. In 2003, Ford auctioned the first-ever Ford GT sold to the public for $557,500. The proceeds from that auction also benefited various charities. I would be shocked if this GT would get even close to $500,000 when so many Ford GT's are available for MSRP.
“Our plan from the beginning was to build the Ford GT in limited volumes between Ford’s centennial in 2003 and the 40th anniversary of the GT40’s victory over Ferrari this year,” says Mark Fields, Ford Motor Company executive vice president and president of The Americas.
“ By every measure, the GT has been a success. In the 1960s, we set out to beat Ferrari. Most recently, we showed that a motivated Ford team could achieve the very same greatness again.”
In this final year of production for the Ford GT , Fields says it is fitting to take a victory lap in conjunction with Carroll Shelby and his children’s charity. Shelby was instrumental in both the design of the original race car and today’s Ford GT. Shelby also has played a key role in the development of the new Ford Shelby GT500, the fastest production Mustang ever and the company’s newest performance car that goes on sale this summer.
“When I think about the exciting Ford GT and the new Ford Shelby GT500 coming this summer, it’s clear that Ford has raised the bar on performance,” says Shelby.
Shelby has scored successes in the performance world since he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans and was named Sports Car Illustrated’s “Driver of the Year” in 1959.
Retiring from racing after being diagnosed with a heart ailment, Shelby founded Shelby American and teamed up with Ford Motor Company to create the Ford V-8 powered Cobra sports car in 1962. It went on to dominate road racing for years to come.
Later, Shelby spearheaded the development of the Ford GT40 racing program, which knocked Ferrari from atop the racing world. The GT40 swept to its famed 1-2-3 finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race in 1966 before proceeding to take first place the next three years in a row.
At age 83, Shelby is the oldest and longest-living double-organ recipient. He received a heart in 1990, and his son Mike donated a kidney to him in 1996. He created the Carroll Shelby Children’s Foundation in October 1991 to provide financial assistance for acute coronary and kidney care for young people.
“We’ve worked with Barrett-Jackson many times before, they have helped raise so much money for charities over the years, it’s a natural for Ford to offer this special Ford GT here,” says Shelby. “I’m grateful to both, as well as to the auction winner, for so generously helping the many children that desperately need medical assistance.”

The Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach auction will include a charity preview gala, vendor displays and three days of no reserve auction excitement from Thursday, March 30, through Saturday, April 1 at The South Florida Expo Center. This year’s event will include more than 600 quality collector cars. SPEED Channel will provide television coverage.
Pontiac Drops two Vibe Models
Pontiac had decided to drop two models of the Vibe due to slow sales and difficulty meeting new emissions standards for 2007.
Pontiac will be eliminating both the Vibe GT and the AWD drive model from the 2007 lineup. Leaving only the base model for sale, which continues to sell well at it's sub $17,000 price point. The 2007 emissions standards are the reason that Pontiac also cited for the discontinuing of the new GTO.

Photos of 2007 BMW M3 - Spy Photo
An eagle eyed photographer has caught two new photos of what should prove to be the new BMW M3 coupe. BMW hasn't given any details about the future of the M3 so it's not know if it will be released as an '07 or '08 model.
It's also been rumored that the new M3 would debut a unique body style but from the look of these photos it looks as if the M3 will retain the styling of the new 3-series coupe. Like the current M3 the new one looks to keep the quad tailpipes, huge fender flares, and unique front fascia. It also looks as if the new M3 might have a unique 'bulged' hood to cover the massive engine.

GM Cuts Nearly 500 White Collar Jobs
On Tuesday General Motors cut nearly 500 jobs from 30 different locations. Affected were the Detroit-area engineering center and proving grounds. The cuts are part of the white collar job reduction program GM announced late last year, when it said that it would cut 2,500 positions in 2006.
The staff reduction comes only days after GM reached an agreement with the UAW for offering union employee's early retirement packages.

Chrysler 300 Extended Wheelbase will debut at New York Auto Show
Chrysler will be debuting a 'mini limo' extended wheel based version of it's 300C at the upcoming New York Auto Show. The stretched version of the sedan will add an extra six inches to the length and a 10.2 additional cubic feet of space. The Chrysler 300C Long Wheelbase will have the option of the 3.5-liter V-6 or the 5.7-liter V-8 Hemi.

It will soon take just a bit longer than usual to linger over the Chrysler 300.
Chrysler Group announced today that a new model — the 2007 Chrysler 300 Long Wheelbase — will be on display at the New York International Auto Show, in the Jacob K. Javits Center, April 14-23 in New York City. The Chrysler 300 Long Wheelbase is six inches longer than the current models, providing more than 46 inches of rear legroom and an additional 10.2 cubic feet of interior space. Available this fall, the lengthier Chrysler 300 is expected to attract sales from the livery/limousine industry, as well as retail customers.
"The 300 Long Wheelbase will have six inches more of the elegant, distinct design that made the Chrysler 300 the most-awarded new car in automotive history," said David Rooney, Director —Chrysler Marketing Communications. "In addition, limousine-like features have been added and custom options are available. The result is a truly distinctive and personalized experience for commercial and retail customers, all for what will be an affordable price."
Both the 300 Touring and 300C Long Wheelbase models can be ordered with unique, personalized features, including lighted rear writing tables, two 12-volt power ports for computers/cell phones, footrests, lighted vanity mirrors and directional reading lights for rear passengers, and available custom paint colors or pinstriping.
The Chrysler 300 Touring Long Wheelbase model will be equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine, providing 250 hp, more than some domestic V-8 competitors. The 300C Long Wheelbase will have the 5.7-liter V-8 HEMI® engine, generating 340 hp, and the Multi-Displacement System (MDS), which seamlessly reduces the number of cylinders from eight to four when less power is required, improving fuel economy.
The 300 Long Wheelbase will be modified by Accubuilt, a leading custom specialty vehicle manufacturer with more than 128 years of experience, based in Lima, Ohio, and will be sold through Chrysler dealerships.
Pricing and production information will be provided closer to launch this fall.
Hyundai Executives Barred from Leaving Country
South Korea probes Hyundai over political lobbying
South Korea today barred about 10 officials at South Korea's top automaker, Hyundai, from leaving the country over a probe into the suspected illegal political lobbying.
Also detained was Lee Ju-eun, the executive of car shipper Glovis Co. Ltd., for questioning over allegations that he was involved in raising funds used for political lobbying. Hyundai Motor Chairman Chung Mong-koo and his son, Chung Eui-sun, president of Kia, own a combined 60 percent of Glovis.
On Sunday, prosecutors raided the offices of Hyundai and Kia Motor Corporation. The prosecution official said the investigation was linked to a probe into a local businessman alleged to have received funds from the companies for political lobbying.

Continental AutoSports hosts an Evening with David Hobbs
This weekend Gear6 was invited to attend a special evening at Continental AutoSports. The event was a gathering of both the Ferrari Owners Club and the Vintage Sports Car Club of America who had the honor of being hosted at the beautiful Continental AutoSports, just outside Chicago.
Besides the cars and the food the highlight of the night was the talk by racing legend David Hobbs. As you might imagine Mr. Hobbs was quite animated and had the crowd laughing the entire evening as he told the tales of his racing years and his adventures in owning a Honda dealership and his work in broadcasting. IRL Driver Paul Dana has Died After Crash
At approximately 10:03 a.m. Sunday morning during the morning practice session for the Toyota Indy 300, Paul Dana and Ed Carpenter were involved in an accident. Carpenter had spun and struck the wall, coming to a stop on the track. Three other cars on the track avoid Carpenter but Dana struck him at high speed launching his car over Carpenter and into the wall.
Both drivers were airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital were shortly before noon Paul Dana passed away. Carpenters injuries are being reported as being minor. Dana was part of Rahal Letterman Racing and this was his first race since recovering from a broken back suffered last during a crash.
"On behalf of our entire team, our sympathies go out to Tonya (Dana) and their entire family," Rahal said. "It is a very black day for us. As a result, we have withdrawn our #15 (Buddy Rice) and our #16 (Danica Patrick) cars from today's race. These cars are expected to race at St. Petersburg (FL) next weekend." Rahal indicated no decision had been made whether Dana's car will be entered in the next race.

Doge Caliber SRT4 microsite is launched
Dodge has just launched a new microsite for the all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber SRT4.
The Caliber SRT4, which replaces the Neon SRT4, offers a 300 horsepower and 260 lb. ft. of torque from it's 2.4-litre turbocharge four-banger. Sixty mph will come at you in less then six seconds from this little rocket. Pricing is still not available.

Rent-A-Racer Returns to Hertz
For most of us the idea of renting a car is none to exciting; oh sure you can upgrade to the luxury model and get the Caddy but it's no race car. There was a time though when you could call up your local Hertz Rent-A-Car and request a Shelby Mustang GT350H! The Hertz Rent-A-Racer program offered you the chance to rent a black and gold 1966 GT350H for just $17 a day and $.17 per mile. The stories are of what would happen to these cars are legendary and not surprisingly Hertz discontinued the program due to the high cost of repairing these rental race cars and every increasing insurance premiums.
Most thought the program would never return but Edmunds.com is reporting that Ford will be producing 200 black and gold Mustang GT's for Hertz. UPDATE: Click Here for all the details of the Hertz GT350H rental program.
Is Porsche building a low-end SUV?
Could Porsche be looking to increase it's model offerings even further by offering a low-end SUV to compete with the BMW X3?
Rumors have been swirling that Porsche has developed a full clay model of a three-door off-roader that would fit below the Cayenne in both price and performance. Most estimates would put the new 'mini' Cayenne price around $35,000.
Other speculation has Volkswagen building the SUV for Porsche with both companies selling a model as is the case with the VW Tourage and Cayenne. Others have made the prediction that a small Porsche based SUV could become the new Audi Roadjet. Porsche currently is the largest share holder of VW owning 20 percent of the company.
Mallet Cars to Build High Performance Saturn Sky
Mallet Cars has announced that it has received it's first 2006 Saturn Sky to begin development of a high performance version similar to the Mallet Solstice. No details have been given as to what horsepower upgrades might be but as soon as more details are available we'll let you know!

Mazda to sell race ready NR-A Miata in Japan
Those Japanese Mazda fans who are looking to race their MX-5 Miata (known in Japan as the Roadster) can now purchase a race prepped model right from Mazda. The NR-A model Roadster features height adjustable Bilstein dampers, torque-sensing limited slip differential, and front strut tower bars to make the all ready nimble Roadster handle even better. You also get a leather-wrapped steering wheel and aluminum pedals. The NR-A model will set you back 2.3 million yen or about $19,500 US dollars.
So far their are no plans for the NR-A to be available anywhere outside of Japan.
Scion Announces Pricing for tC Release Series 2.0
Scion, of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., announced today that the second limited-production Scion for 2006, the tC Release Series 2.0 (tC R.S. 2.0), hits dealer showrooms beginning in mid-April.
The 2006 tC Release Series 2.0 will come in a brilliant Blue Blitz Mica. This limited edition tC features a stainless steel mesh upper and lower front grille and 17-inch alloy wheels that come with a satin metallic finish. The tC's only factory option, front seat-mounted side airbags and front and rear side curtain airbags, is standard equipment on the R.S. 2.0.
Inside, the tC's front and rear seats are trimmed with black Alcantara(R), a suede-like material that provides passengers better friction grip and is more commonly found in luxury or performance vehicles and on aftermarket racing seats. The tC R.S. 2.0 comes standard with a Pioneer Premium AM/FM/CD audio system with iPod connectivity and color-changing LED display.
A Pioneer six-inch subwoofer with 35-watt maximum power complements the upgraded head unit and is tuned specifically for the tC. This compact subwoofer is mounted in the under-floor storage area, keeping it out of sight and leaving the cargo floor clear. This tC also is equipped with XM Satellite Radio and comes with a paid three-month subscription, wherever XM service is available. An individually numbered brushed stainless steel badge completes the uniqueness of this vehicle.
Only 2,600 units of the tC Release Series 2.0 will be built. The tC Release Series 2.0 model will carry a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $1,960 over the base price of the tC. The base MSRP for the tC starts at $16,300.

Civic Hybrid in Short Supply
Honda's Civic Hybrid hasn't enjoyed all the press and fan fare that the Toyota Prius or even it's cousin the Honda Insight have enjoyed but it's definitely selling well. So well that Honda is having a hard time even keeping the compact hybrid on dealership lots.
"(Civic Hybrid inventory) is going to vary by dealer, but they are well under short supply - three days on the lot essentially," John Mendel, senior vice president-auto operations, American Honda Motor Co. Inc., says here at an Automotive Press Assn. event.
The recently redesigned Civic is selling so well that the entire lineup is in short supply which some are crediting for people opting for the higher priced hybrid because other models are not available. Others attribute the Civic Hybrids sales to Honda not making the car 'stick out' and keeping the styling almost identical to it's non-hybrid counterparts.
Honda hasn't made any decisions as to whether or not output of the small hybrid will be increased. Mendel was quoted as saying “What we don’t want to ever do is get into the situation where we have excess capacity, which is sitting there idling, not doing anything,”.
GM to Offer Buyout Deal to More Than 125,000 Workers
The New York Times is reporting that GM the UAW and Delphi Corporation have reached an agreement that would offer incentives to more than 125,000 workers at the two companies if they agree to leave their jobs. GM said all 113,000 of its hourly employees in the United States would be offered packages to retire or leave. No estimate was given as to how many might accept the offer, and no figures were give as to the compensation package.
Delphi, the country's biggest auto parts supplier reported it would offer payments of $35,000 to 13,000 of its 34,000 workers in the United States who elect to leave the company. Workers for either company are not obligated to accept the offers nor did this remove the threat of a strike at Delphi, who is currently operating under bankruptcy protection.
G.M. spokeswoman, Katie McBride, said that about 36,000 G.M. workers were eligible to retire with full pension and benefits. While an additional 27,000 workers are within a few years of retirement, and would be offered credit that would allow them to retire with full benefits, Ms. McBride said.
Delphi, called the agreement a "critical milestone." It said it would offer cash payments of $35,000 to 13,000 workers, slightly more than half the 24,000 represented by the U.A.W., if they agree to leave the company. In all, it has about 34,000 workers in the United States.

General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM), the United Auto Workers union and Delphi Corp. have reached an agreement to reduce the number of U.S. hourly employees through an accelerated attrition program. The agreement, which is an important contributor to GM's turnaround plan in North America, is subject to approval of Delphi's participation by the Bankruptcy Court.
The program is expected to be offered to U.S. hourly employees at GM and select UAW-represented members of Delphi's hourly work force. It will include a combination of early retirement incentives and other considerations to help reduce employment levels at both GM and Delphi in a manner that benefits both eligible employees and the companies.
"When we announced the capacity rationalization and employment reduction plan late last year, we said we'd be working with UAW leadership to develop an accelerated attrition program that would help us achieve needed cost reductions as rapidly as possible, while at the same time responding to the needs of our employees," said GM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner. "We are pleased that this agreement will help fulfill that important objective. In addition, the agreement will enhance the prospects for GM, the UAW, and Delphi to reach a broad-based consensual resolution of the Delphi restructuring."
The program will be offered to all GM hourly employees, but overall acceptance rates will depend on individual employee decisions. The program also permits the flow of UAW-represented Delphi employees back to GM until September 2007. In addition, eligible UAW-represented Delphi employees may elect to retire from Delphi or flow back to GM and retire.
Under the agreement, GM has agreed to assume the financial obligations related to the lump sum payments to be made to eligible Delphi U.S. hourly employees accepting normal or voluntary retirement incentives and certain post-retirement employee benefit obligations related to Delphi employees who flow back to GM under the plan. GM expects to record the cost associated with the attrition program in 2006. The cost will be incurred as employees agree to participate.

Chevy SSR production comes to a halt - no one cares
The slow selling much over hyped Chevy SSR retro hot-rod pickup rolled of the production line for the last time Friday. The Trailblazer-based SSR had been produced for three years with a total of 24,150 units being assembled.
The SSR never really caught on criticized initially for it's lack of power and automatic only transmission. Even after Chevy upped the horsepower and offered a six speed manual the $40,000 SSR was slow to sell.

Audi Q7 Side Assist Animation
Audi created this video to demonstrate how it's revolutionary Side Assist Technology operates. The system is found on their new Q7 can aid the driver in knowing what is happening around their vehicle.
The technology alerts the driver as a vehicle approaches the Q7 by lighting an amber signal on the side mirror. As the oncoming car gets closer to the Q7 the signal rapidly blinks to alert the driver it would be dangerous to make a lane change. Simple idea but very cool technology!
Maybe it would have helped this Audi TT driver if he had Side Assist Technology?
Honda Announces Pricing for All-New 2007 Fit
The all-new 2006 Honda Fit will make it's debut at dealerships nationwide on April 20th and Honda announced the pricing structure today. The base model Fit will carry a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $13,850.
Built on Honda's foundation of dependability, quality and reliability, the Fit includes a 109 horsepower, 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder, VTEC engine with a 5-speed manual transmission (an automatic transmission is also available, bringing the suggested retail price to $14,650). The Fit's standard safety features include dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags, dual front side airbags, side-curtain airbags and an anti-lock braking system (ABS). Big on space, the Fit incorporates more than 111 cubic feet of interior volume and a Magic Seat that provides four distinct seating and cargo carrying configurations.
Priced at $15,170, the Fit Sport model with manual transmission adds a rear roofline spoiler, aero body kit, fog lights, security system with keyless remote entry, cruise control, a 200-watt, six-speaker audio system and 15-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with P195/55R15 tires. Fit Sport models with the available automatic transmission come standard with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and will be available at the suggested retail price of $15,970.
Additionally, the Fit can be customized with Honda Factory Performance equipment including 16-inch alloy wheels, sport exhaust, chrome exhaust tip finisher, rear bumper accents and a sport mesh grille.
The Fit has an estimated city/highway fuel economy rating of 33/38 miles per gallon (manual transmission) and is expected to be among the highest ratings in its class. Destination and handling charges for all 2007 Honda vehicles are $550.
Alfa 8c Competizione may not see production after all
Several weeks ago it was reported that Alfa Romeo would be putting the stunning 8c Competizione concept into production. But Fastdrive.com is now reporting that a decision has been made not to produce the car because of fears that the 8c would cut into sales of the Maserati 4200GT.
It was also feared that such a high dollar limited production coupe would not be able to be supported by the existing network of Alfa Romeo dealers. There is hope that the styling cues from the 8c might make their way on to a smaller more high volume Alfa car in the near future maybe in time for Alfa's return to the United States.

Sound Cameras will Ticket your Loud Car
Acoustic Research Laboratories has developed a new type of camera ticketing system that can issue tickets to vehicles passing by that exceeded the predetermined noise threshold. It can detect loud sub-woofers, a noisy exhaust, or even an inopportune honk of the horn.
The system works with a combination of sound level meters, cameras and computer processors to identify potential targets. Separate microphone and video modules are mounted in waterproof boxes that communicate with a laptop control unit using WiFi. Acoustic Research Laboratories claims that the system distinguishes predetermined trigger sounds from general background road noise. Once configured, it will generate up to 10,000 tickets before the on-board hard drive is filled. A 10-second video and audio clip is stored for each incident so.
Video - Audi dealer is crushed by runaway semi; lucky to be alive.
A New Jersey Audi dealer was crushed while driving his Audi TT last week, the crash was caught on the safety camera on board a bus that was also involved in the accident. The video shows Bryan Pacelli's Audi TT being crushed between the semi trailer and the bus after the semi suddenly came in to Pacelli's lane pinning him against the highway barrier.
Amazingly Pacelli only suffered minor injuries and is expected to make a full recovery. Police say the out-of-control truck was overloaded by 16,000 pounds and was running on bald tires. Pacelli, who is an Audi dealer, chalked it up to the safe design of the sports coupe.

BMW - Pimp my Airplane
BMW has always been good at designing beautiful, functional interiors loaded with all the latest gadgets to create the 'ultimate driving machine'. Now BMW has teamed up with Airbus to create the 'ultimate flying machine' using the new Airbus A350 twinjet.
BMW has been enlisted to redesign the interior of the A350 for the upcoming Aircraft Interiors Expo 2006 exhibition in Hamburg, Germany next month. Features include a ceiling that can project images to fit the mood - for example the night sky, clouds, or even a sunrise. Storage bins have been redesigned to accommodate more luggage, a bar area has been added, and a dome over the entrance to the plane gives the feeling of spaciousness in the cabin.

American Le Mans Series kicks off season with 12 Hours of Sebirng
The American Le Mans Series kicked off the 2007 racing season this morning with the 54th running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.
Today's race looks to offer all the typical thrills of an American Le Mans race but making it an even more spectacular event a load of new models and technology will be making their debut at today's ALMS race. Taking center stage is Audi's all new R10 TDI which is making waves with it's revolutionary diesel motor cranking out over 800 foot pounds of torque! Porsche is also back this year in prototype racing with the brand new RS Spyder LMP2 race car which is extremely fast but may not be able to survive the grueling 12 hour race as reliablity issues have already started to show. Ferrari is also debuting the F430 race car which qualified ahead of the Corvettes which have dominated the series for years. Also debuting is the BMW E46 M3 and Spyker C8 Spyder.

Nissan to launch new Altima at New York Auto Show
Autoweek is reporting that Nissan will debut the all-new 2007 Altima at the New York Auto Show. Not much is known about the new Altima but Autoweek has dug up the above photo showing the new Altimas's rear taillights to be very different then the current model.

Mazda 6 hits 1 million units
Mazda Motor Corporation has announced that total global production of the MAZDA6 (known as Atenza in Japan) reached the one million-unit mark in late February 2006. It took four years and one month to reach this important milestone since the first MAZDA6 came off the line at the Hofu No. 2 Plant in February 2002. This is the fastest time ever to reach one million units of production for a single Mazda vehicle model.

Kia to Build First U.S. Plant in Georgia
Kia Motors Corp. confirms it will build a new $1.2 billion vehicle manufacturing facility in West Point, GA.
The South Korean manufactures first U.S. plant will begin production in 2009 and employ 2,500 workers. Annual production for the plant will be up to 300,000 vehicles annually. According to Kia officials they decided to locate the plant in West Point primarily on "maximizing synergies with the Hyundai Motor Co. Ltd.'s Alabama plant, availability of a qualified workforce in the area and strong logistical and transportation infrastructure". Hyundai and Kia are part of the Hyundai Automotive Group.
Wards Automotive News is reporting that the state of Georgia offered Kia a $410 million dollar package. Local media reports say Kia will receive $75.9 million in tax credits over a 5-year period, $20.2 million for a job-training facility to be built on the plant site property, $60.5 million to prepare the site and $130 million in tax abatements from the City of West Point and Troup County over a 15-year period.

Curtains for the S60?
Autoweek is reporting that the midsized Volvo S60 sedan could be axed when the all-new S80 hits showrooms.
Nothing is official but it seems that the conservative Swedish car maker might be looking to invest its resources on more profitable models like a crossover, coupe or even a sports car to further expand the Volvo lineup.
Autoweek is suggesting that the S40 will grow in size to eventually almost reach the size of the current S60 eliminating the need for the S60 in the Volvo line up. But the problem for Volvo is they don't want to abandon the current S60 owners who buy nearly 60,000 new cars a year. It could prove difficult to convince current S60 owners to move up in price to the S80 or down in size and refinement to an S40.
Mitsubishi sets price for Eclipse Spyder
The all-new 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder officially goes on sale today and since pricing has never been released for the Spyder, Mitsubishi took the time to send out a press release with all the numbers.
With a starting price of $25,389 the all-new 2007 Eclipse Spyder convertible offers features usually reserved for cars costing well above $30,000. If you want to step in to a GT edition Spyder prices start at $28,269. The new Spyders will start to arrive in dealerships this week, just in time for spring.

Bugatti ups Veyron production
Tax returns are coming back and it looks like the ultra wealthy can afford a few more Bugatti Veyrons then originally thought! Bugatti announced yesterday that they will be increasing output at is French production facility to bring annual capacity up to 70 cars from the original 50 that were planned. This news came from Bugatti President Thomas Bscher, at the Geneva Motor Show.
The goal is of course to sell more cars but more importantly cut waiting times down from the current 14 to 15 month period. I guess when you're dropping $1.19 million on a car you would like it in a timely fashion. Already more then 70 contracts for delivery have been drawn up and with the Veyrons recent US certification Bugatti expects North American sales to jump.

Six-Stroke Engine Concept
Bruce Crower has made a name for himself with his aftermarket performance parts business Crower Cams, but at 75 years old Crower may have done the most remarkable thing in his life. Crower has developed a six-stroke engine that may just forever change the automotive world.
Using a modified single-cylinder diesel engine Crower converted it to use gasoline, then machined the necessary parts to create the worlds only six-stroke engine. The engine works through harnessing wasted heat energy created by the fuel combustion to add another two-strokes to the engine cycle. After the combustion stage water is injected into the super heated cylinder and steam forms forcing the piston back down and in turn cools the engine. The result is normal levels of power using much less fuel and no need for an external cooling system.
Crower is now trying to develop a working diesel version of the motor which he feels will be even more efficient and could see the most promising usage in semi truck applications where huge amounts of fuel are wasted in the cooling systems for large trucks.
Much more testing is needed to be preformed on the six-stroke motor but at this early stage it looks as if it could be a very promising power plant for the future saving both on fuel costs and proving more beneficial to the environment.
2007 Audi TT Photos
The look of the 2007 Audi TT has been kept a very close secret and until now no real photos have existed. But the cat is out of the bag as the first photos of the new Audi TT have turned up. AutoWeek has nine photos of the yet to be unveiled TT under going colder weather testing. For the most part it looks as if the TT has kept it's original shape but has grown in size and the now trademark Audi grill have been added to it's nose.
Based on the A3 the new TT will arrive as a 2007 model with the roadster following. The base engine will be a 2.0L 250 horsepower four cylinder or you can option for the 3.2L 300 horsepower V6 motor. Toyota Camry to be produced by Subaru in Indiana
Toyota announced today that the Toyota Camry will be built at Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (SIA), directly creating about 1,000 jobs.
This isn't a big surprise as this has been rumored about ever since GM sold it's stake in Subaru to Toyota several months ago. It's a good fit for Toyota who is looking to expand production in the US and can tap a good quality resource right in the middle of North America.

March 13, 2006 – Lafayette, IN - Governor Mitch Daniels announced today that the Toyota Camry will be built at Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (SIA), directly creating about 1,000 jobs.
The news is part of a collaborative agreement announced today between SIA parent Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI) and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), a FHI stakeholder.
About $230 million will be invested to install Camry manufacturing processes in an existing SIA line capable of producing about 100,000 vehicles annually. Camry production at SIA begins in Spring 2007.
With this additional capacity and other expansions underway, Toyota will have North American annual production capacity of about 2 million cars and trucks by 2008.
Camry production in Indiana replaces imports and provides Toyota with the ability to build more of the popular car. Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky (TMMK), which builds Camry, will support SIA by providing training on Camry processes. Parts and materials for the Indiana-built Camry will be sourced and procured by Toyota.
"Toyota and Subaru are tremendous corporate citizens who have boosted our economy in Indiana. Now, we will be the first state with Toyota vehicle production in two different plants," Gov. Daniels said.
"We are pleased to further boost localization by moving Camry production in Japan to the United States. It's a win-win situation for Toyota and SIA, and for our suppliers whose businesses will grow," said Gary Convis, president of TMMK. "This will be the same high quality and reliability that have made Camry the best-selling U.S. car. We have the highest confidence in SIA to help us continue to meet our customers' expectations."
"For over 16 years SIA associates have been building high quality Subaru vehicles in Indiana," said Tom Easterday, senior vice president of SIA. "Today's announcement that we will add production of the Toyota Camry at SIA in 2007 reaffirms that SIA has an outstanding workforce that is prepared to meet the challenges of a very competitive automotive market. All associates at SIA look forward to working closely with Toyota on this project."
Currently, SIA builds the Subaru B9 Tribeca, Outback, Legacy and Baja. SIA produced about 120,000 Subarus in 2005. The Subaru B9 Tribeca will move to the production line where the Outback, Legacy and Baja are currently built to make room for the Camry.
Toyota (NYSE:TM) established operations in North America in 1957 and currently operates 14 manufacturing plants including two under construction. There are more than 1,700 Toyota, Lexus and Scion dealerships in North America which sell more than 2.5 million vehicles a year. Toyota directly employs over 38,000 in North America and its investment here is currently valued at more than $16.8 billion, including sales and manufacturing operations, research and development, financial services and design. Toyota's annual purchasing of parts, materials, goods and services from North American suppliers totals more than $26 billion. According to a 2005 Center for Automotive Research study, Toyota, along with its dealers and suppliers, has generated nearly 400,000 U.S. jobs, including jobs created through spending by direct, dealer and suppliers employees.
Toyota produces 10 vehicles in North America, including the Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Matrix, Sienna, Solara, Sequoia, Tacoma, Tundra and the Lexus RX 330. By 2008, Toyota will have the annual capacity to build about 2 million cars and trucks, 1.44 million engines and 600,000 automatic transmissions in North America.

My personal repair nightmare started 9 weeks ago when I took my recently bought Audi Certified Preowned S4 in to the local Audi dealer because it was making a strange noise in the front passenger side wheel. I won't bore you with the details, I'm sure your stories are more interesting, but after 4 weeks the cars was in no better shape then when I brought it in.
A quick call to Audi of America to let them know what was happening and the dealer was persuaded to get to the bottom of the issue which still took another 5 weeks to sort out! I finally have my car back and Audi even covered my payments while it was in the shop. The snow has now melted and summer is just around the corner, life is good again.

Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Silverados being recalled by NHTSA
Nearly 900,000 Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierra pickup trucks are being recalled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for faulty tailgate cables that can deteriorate from corrosion. All of the affected models were from the 1999 - 2000 model year.
The NHTSA is afraid that a faulty tailgate cable could break under heavy load causing the contents of the pickup bed to break loose from the truck. In 2004 GM recalled 2000 - 2004 models for the same problem.

Audi preparing A2 Mini killer
The Audi A2 which has not been a very strong seller in Europe looks to be taking on a new role for it's debut as a 2008 model. This next generation of the A2 will be aimed squarely at the BMW Mini.
Audi sources have said the next generation A2 will be based on the Volkswagen Polo platform which is front wheel drive. It's likely that the A2 would be offered with Audi's trademark Quattro all wheel drive system. It's also been confirmed that the new model will closely resemble the Shooting Brake concept shown at the Tokyo auto show.
"When we look at this segment it is clear there are a lot of customers who want a car below the A3," Audi Chairman Martin Winterkorn said in an interview at the Geneva auto show. "Mini has done well with its car. It has become more and more apparent there is demand there."

Mercedes SLR Roadster...will they build it?
The Mercedes SLR McLaren has been a big hit for both companies in fact they just produced the 1,000th SLR. It's now being reported by WhatCar? magazine that Mercedes and McLaren are planning spin-off versions of the SLR supercar.
Dieter Zetsche chairman of DaimlerChrysler, said the company was investigating small production runs of the SLR with different bodystyles. 'We could do 50-100 cars with certain attributes' he told Whatcar?, hinting a roadster version could be in the cards.
Powered by a 626bhp V8, the SLR can reach 208mph and can run 0 -60 in 3.8 seconds. A smaller, cheaper SLR is rumored to be in development to compete with the Ferrari F430 and Porsche 911 Turbo.

Ford SVT is History
Ford's SVT division will be gone by April 1st.
Edmunds.com is reporting that Ford's performance Special Vehicle Team (SVT) is likely to be gone by April 1st. The writing has been on the wall for more then a year that Ford was not interested in keeping SVT around. Ford has steadily taken away every product from SVT. Except for the 2007 Mustang Shelby Cobra the SVT badge is all but gone.
Edmunds is reporting that SVT no longer has a dedicated marketing staff, public relations, independent engineering team, or press fleet. SVT's executive staff is gone, and the dealer network is reportedly in shambles.
SVT has not had a dedicated product since 2004 when the SVT Lighting was last available. A new high-performance version of the Explorer Sport Trac was shown last year at the New York auto show called the Adrenalin. It was due to go on sale as a 2007 model but last month the Adrenalin was nixed as part of Ford's way forward plan. This is the second such embarrassment for SVT: The company showed a concept version of a new 500-horsepower Lightning in 2003 and promised to produce it, but in late 2004, pulled the plug.
Aluminum surpasses iron in automotive production
Automakers increasingly turn to aluminum to improve fuel economy, safety and driving performance
Global aluminum use in automotive applications continues to grow, according to a new report commissioned by The Aluminum Association, Inc., and when compared to use of other metals, aluminum has now exceeded iron to become the second most used automotive material worldwide. Highlights of the report were unveiled by executives from Alcoa and Novelis, leading aluminum manufacturers, during a press conference today.
"Aluminum penetration in the auto industry continues to surpass competing materials as leading automakers recognize the metal's value in boosting fuel economy, performance and safety, while reducing emissions. With today's sky high fuel prices, rising global warming concerns and increasing safety demands, aluminum is a proven solution today, with even greater promise for tomorrow," said Misha Riveros-Jacobson, president of advanced transportation systems for Alcoa.
Commissioned by the Auto & Light Truck Group (ALTG) of The Aluminum Association, Inc., and conducted by Ducker Worldwide, the study found that passenger vehicles in North America now contain an average of 319 pounds of aluminum representing a 16 percent increase from 2002 data, which now places aluminum second only to steel in automotive applications.
Also released today by the ALTG was a related value study on aluminum's costs and related benefits. While the metal's rising use confirms its cost benefit advantages in many applications today, the aluminum industry also documents the additional value and cost savings aluminum could offer as more of the metal is used in the future. The value study, conducted by IBIS Associates, reveals the potential for significant additional cost savings from secondary weight savings and associated cost reductions, which can significantly offset upfront materials costs.
"Aluminum's value is far reaching since it can safely reduce weight, which means automakers can downsize components accordingly and recoup those secondary cost savings," said Martha Brooks, chief operating officer for Novelis. "Consumers also can save money at the gas pump, as low weight vehicles using aluminum require less fuel to get around."
Release of these new studies is well timed, given the fact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will soon issue new fuel-economy standards for SUVs, pickups and minivans for Model Year 2008 through 2011. NHTSA's earlier draft rule proposed size-based standards, in part to encourage automakers to make even greater use of high strength, low weight materials like aluminum. NHTSA's effort is consistent with recent studies by the aluminum industry and others, which confirm the size of a vehicle -- not its weight -- is a better measure of a vehicle's safety. Therefore NHTSA's new fuel economy rule encourages even greater use of aluminum and similar materials in order to maintain or even increase vehicle size for safety, while reducing vehicle weight for improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.
"As the auto industry continues to innovate to meet consumer and government demands the world over, whether it's through hybrid engines, cleaner fuels, or simply making cars and trucks more fun to drive, aluminum will continue to help build better cars and trucks," summarized Stephen Larkin, president of The Aluminum Association, Inc. Volkswagen and Microsoft at CeBIT
Volkswagen will be presenting a study on the Eos which was created in collaboration with Microsoft and will be on display at the upcoming CeBIT electronics show. Microsoft and Volkswagen teamed up to create a car that was a 'mobile media center on the road' by integrating a 650 MHz pc with a 20 GB hard drive into the car allowing the user to enjoy all the functions they have at home. The data processor is located in the backrests of the rear seats. Both have 7 inch monitors installed in the head restraints of the front seats.

In addition to a navigation system, pictures, videos, DVDs and music can also be played, even online work is possible. Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione will see production
Remember the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione concept that debuted at the 2003 Frankfurt auto show? The V8 powered, carbon fiber, front engined super car that everyone was drooling over might actually see production! Over two years after it's debut Alfa's new CEO, Antonio Baravalle, has now proclaimed 'It is my dream to do it. We have cut the budget for our advertising campaign and will do the 8C instead, because it is a perfect way to promote the Alfa brand.'
It is planned to have the 8C ready for the Paris show in September and to take orders for a 500-car production run. The final details are still in the air but it is most likely to be a carbon fiber body over a spaceframe chassis, with an engine based on the block used by the current Ferrari / Maserati V8s. Target horsepower will be around 440bhp, no price has yet been set.

GM selling 17 percent of Suzuki
TOKYO, Japan (UPI) -- General Motors Corp. will reduce its stake in Suzuki Motor Corp. from 20.4 percent to 3.0 percent.
The sale of 92.36 million shares, of about 17.4 percent of Suzuki`s outstanding shares, is expected to get GM a pre-tax profit of about $650 million, the automaker said Monday.
GM will retain its strategic ties to Suzuki but said the move was needed to further build its 'liquidity position during this critical phase of our turnaround.'
The carmaker has held an equity stake in Suzuki since 1981, when it purchased about 5.3 percent of the Suzuki shares. GM`s stake was diluted to 3.5 percent in subsequent years, but in 1998 GM increased its holding in Suzuki to 10 percent and to slightly more than 20 percent in 2001.

Failed tires ok'd for Explorers
Ford Motor Co. approved replacement tires for its Explorer sport-utility vehicle that made it just as likely to roll over as the originals Ford blamed for more than 200 deaths.
Ford's test results of replacement tires, introduced as evidence last month in an Explorer trial in Mississippi, may support hundreds of pending lawsuits claiming the vehicle is unstable and could flip over during evasive driving. Ford has lost six Explorer rollover cases totaling $151 million in jury verdicts in the past 12 months. In a 2000 government investigation into Explorer rollovers, the company blamed the original Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. tires for the accidents.
James Bond to drive Ford Mondeo, the end is nigh
The new 007 film Casino Royale is now in the works and Softpedia is reporting that James will not be driving an Aston Martin outfitted with Q's latest gadgets but instead will be cruising in a Ford Mondeo. To those not familiar with the Mondeo it's about as exciting as a Ford 500. The London Sun has reported that the Mondeo used in the film will be a souped up 224 km/h model; it still won't do much for Bond's image. Even though an Aston won't be the primary car for the new film it will make an appearance with the new James Bond star, Daniel Craig taking one for a drive. Ferrari 599 GTB 'Fiorano' makes Geneva debut
Ferrari and Lamborghini both had big debuts in Geneva today, with Ferrari releasing the much anticipated 599 GTB Fiorano. The GTB Fiorano will be available with a Racing / Track option that includes 20-inch wheels, four-point harnesses, carbon/ceramic brakes, roll cage, and F1 style carbon fiber steering wheel with built-in shift lights. Oh it's also the most powerful 12 cyclinder production car of all time.
Ferrari at the 76th Geneva Motor Show
The 9.7% increase in turnover was contributed to in great part by North America (with approximately 8% more cars sold in 2005 than 2004), Italy, the United Kingdom, France and Switzerland. However, the new and emerging markets (the Middle-East, Eastern Europe and South America) also contributed quite substantially with sales growing significantly there. Thanks to our brand-new dealership network in China, in fact, a total of 82 cars were delivered there, a leap of around 100% on 2004.
The technical specification of the engine speaks for itself: 5999 cm3 displacement, a specific power output of 103 hp/litre (a first for a naturally aspirated production engine of this displacement).
The new generation F1 gearbox that debuts on the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano is a further development of the F1 gearbox used on all of the models in the Ferrari range.
The F1-SuperFast system enhances the car's high-performance capabilities by using the elastic energy within the transmission components, together with the integrated electronic engine and gearbox management programmes, to speed up gear change times. The various stages involved in changing the gears are implemented in parallel (non-sequentially) and this results in exceptionally fast gear shifting. In fact, it cuts overall gear-shift times to just 100 ms. The system is integrated with the manettino and the driver is still free to choose between either the Automatic mode or the Launch Control setting which offers smoother starts from standstill.
The experience built up over thousands of kilometres of Formula 1 testing and racing by Ferrari's drivers is now being made available to ensure clients have access to cutting-edge road-holding, safety and stability. The system continually monitors the speed of both front and rear wheels and features predictive software that estimates the maximum available grip in advance, compares this information with the vehicle dynamics model stored in the control system, and adjusts its reactions to suit, optimising traction by modulating power delivery.
SCM (MAGNETORHEOLOGICAL SUSPENSION CONTROL) SUSPENSION
Unlike traditional oleodynamic systems, magnetorheological (MR) fluid suspension systems react instantly to road conditions and driver inputs, thanks to the fact that the dampers use a fluid the viscosity of which is modified by applying an electronically controlled magnetic field.
The steering wheel-mounted manettino vehicle dynamics control switch, originally developed for the 1996 Formula 1 season, has been taken a step further for the new Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano.
Lengthy testing in the wind tunnel at Ferrari plus various simulations have yielded exceptional results in terms of both downforce and drag. The optimisation of the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano's underbody, the rear diffuser and flying buttresses have resulted in an aerodynamic load of just 160 kg at 300 km/h. Similarly, the Cd - drag coefficient - is just 0.336.

25 Tips to Increase Fuel Economy
With gas prices as high as they are we're all looking to increase our fuel economy. And with spring around the corner, we will be spending more time on the road. To help ease the pain at the pump and help the enviromnet, Ford has some ideas on how to increase fuel economy by up to 25 percent.
2. Under inflated tires increase rolling resistance and reduce fuel economy. They also wear rapidly. Check the vehicles door-post sticker for minimum cold tire inflation pressure. Keep tires properly inflated to the recommended pressure—this alone can reduce the average amount of fuel use by 3-4 percent.
3. Replace the air filter as recommended—always consult the owner's manual.
4. Use good quality, energy-conserving (EC) oils that have a viscosity grade consistent with the manual. Look for cans marked with the symbol ECII, which is the American Society of Testing Materials logo for fuel-efficient oils.
5. Use a fuel with good detergent additives – to keep the vehicle engine clean and therefore, performing efficiently.
7. Start car and immediately, but gently, drive away. Don't leave car idling—today's engines don't need to be warmed up. Prolonged idling creates excess emissions and wastes fuel.
8. Turn the engine off when idling more than 30 seconds. Turning off the engine may disable vehicle features including safety features like airbags. Drivers should be certain to only utilize this strategy in situations where there is no possibility of collision.
9. Start slowly, avoiding rapid acceleration. Jackrabbit starts are fuel wasters.
10. Accelerate smoothly and brake gradually. Change lead foot to light foot.
11. Anticipate traffic conditions, and accelerate and decelerate smoothly—it's safer, uses less gas, and reduces brake wear.
12. Maintain safe distance between vehicles.
14. Drive at posted speed limits – this is a tip that may save a life as well as fuel. EPA estimates a 10-15% improvement by driving 55 instead of 65 mph.
15. Use cruise control on the highway.
17. Don't drive at higher speeds with windows wide open. It increases the aerodynamic drag on the highway and lowers fuel economy.
18. Minimize use of air conditioning. Use the vent setting as much as possible.
