TVR Maybe on it's Last Leg

TVR
Quirky British automaker TVR may be in some serious trouble. Today TVR announced that they will be closing its Blackpool factory and at least temporarily laying off 260 workers. TVR CEO Nikolai Smolensky insisted that they are determined to not close the company and they will look to remain in England. "Ideally we would stay around here because that is where the trained people are but we cannot guarantee it. We are investing for the future and our new owner is in it for the long term."

TVR, which was bought in 2004 by Nikolai Smolensky, the son of Russian banker Alexander Smolensky, was not immediately available for comment. Media reports say the firm's sales have suffered over the Winter.

TVR was founded in 1947 by Trevor Wilkinson and the cars have an ardent following among drivers who appreciate their dramatic looks and distinctive engine note.

Official statement on Bristol Avenue cut-backs 25 April 2006

Following TVR's announcement last year that it is to discontinue production at its Bristol Avenue factory in Blackpool by 2007, the company has brought forward its plans to coincide with the cessation of its current lease, which would otherwise require long-term renewal. TVR is to relocate some of its assembly process to a more suitable facility, the exact details of which cannot yet be released.

The cars will continue to be hand-built to customers' orders by highly skilled craftsmen using mostly proprietary components, but the impressive new technology, processes and techniques with which they'll be constructed and tested are considerably more advanced. This will mean a significant and more consistent step-up in precision, quality, reliability and durability, as well as in compliancy with international requirements.

TVRs have been built at Bristol Avenue since the 1970s, so it is regrettable that cut-backs to the local production team have been necessary. TVR wishes to extend its thanks to all of its loyal staff at the factory, as well as its thoughts to all those who have had to be laid-off. The company is confident, however, that this difficult decision is the right one to secure its long-term stability and foothold within the competitive, low-volume sports car industry, as well as to continue to improve its product for the domestic and international marketplace.

The logistics arm of the business will also be modernised to improve the availability of parts and the timeframes within which they're delivered. The entire change-over has, of course, been carefully planned to minimise disruption, and all current authorised dealerships and service centres will remain completely unaffected by the move.

TVR also wishes to clarify that although slow winter sales hit the automotive industry as a whole, its sales have not slumped generally, with demand remaining fairly constant for a number of years. The company remains financially stable and highly optimistic about its future.

As well as an encouragingly high level of interest at its showrooms, TVR is extremely confident in its ongoing plans: it is on schedule for achieving Euro IV emissions approval, which will enable it to sell more concertedly into Europe, and the developments for which will help with selling into the lucrative US and Middle East markets; it is exhibiting at the forthcoming Motor Show, for which it has several surprises planned; testing and production processes and component quality have all advanced markedly, and continue to do so; and a new marketing campaign is under way.

There have also been excellent reactions from the press and the public to TVR's newest and best ever models: the Sagaris coupe, the Tuscan convertible and the completely reworked Tuscan targa, all of which are now backed by a comprehensive three-year/36,000-mile warranty.

TVR is looking forward to enjoying the continued support of its customers and emphatic enthusiasts in the UK and throughout the world, as well as to attracting new ones with the positive progress of the company and its cars. TVR is also preparing for its 60th anniversary celebrations next year.

Introducing the latest expression of individual style - the all-new BMW 3 Series Coupe. With totally new looks, the newest BMW Coupe once again sets the benchmark for elegant design, luxury and value. In true BMW tradition, it also establishes a new standard of performance and driving dynamics with the introduction of an exceptional engine: the first inline six-cylinder with twin-turbochargers, high-precision fuel injection, and an all-aluminum crankcase.

The performance potential of this new 300 horsepower engine ensures that the 335i Coupe offers a significant improvement in performance while maintaining a level of efficiency for which the BMW 3 Series is renowned. The 335i Coupe will be joined in the U.S. by the 230 horsepower 328i Coupe.

In addition to the standard six-speed manual, both models will be offered with an available six-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission. Designed for responsiveness, the new automatic enhances driving dynamics without sacrificing fuel efficiency.

An additional dimension of driving dynamics, with the benefit of outstanding traction, will be offered with the introduction of BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW xDrive is the most sophisticated and responsive all-wheel drive system on the market. It has proven its merits, in terms of agility and safety, in the ten models currently offered with xDrive in the U.S. Beginning this fall these merits will become available to Coupe drivers for the first time.

The premium character of the newest BMW Coupe is recognizable from the very first glance. Over and above the basic shape of the car and its elegant lines, the graphic design of the headlights, the detail of the rear taillights, the interior and even the exterior mirrors were specifically crafted for the new Coupe. These unique design elements reflect the unique character of this elegant and sporty new car.

The buyer who chooses a Coupe wants a car that satisfies their demand for elegant looks as well as driving dynamics. With all this in mind, BMW engineers and designers set out to create a unique yet unmistakable blend of design, features and - most particularly - driving pleasure.

Designed to reflect performance and elegance in the tradition of BMW Coupes

The new Coupe is unquestionably a BMW 3 Series. Yet despite its close technical ties to the Sedan and Sports Wagon, the new BMW 3 Series Coupe is unique in its design details. A genuine BMW from every angle, the new Coupe is an individualist through and through.

The character of any coupe is reflected in its profile. On the new BMW 3 Series Coupe the profile is unmistakably BMW. The long hood reflects BMW's adherence to its tradition of inline six-cylinder engines. The long wheelbase, the passenger compartment set back as well as the low, sleek roofline which slopes gently into the trunk, are all characteristic of BMW Coupes.

In addition to the classic proportions, the shoulder, character and sill lines serve to enhance the sleek appearance. Both the shoulder line and character line stretch uninterrupted to the back of the car, allowing one's eye to move quickly and smoothly from front to rear along the entire length of the car. The sill line on the lower edge of the door also flows into the front and rear air dams, reinforcing the dynamic nature of BMW's newest Coupe.

The combination of lines flowing into one another reflects the performance potential. While the shoulder line rises slightly but consistently from front to rear, the character line flows in a long, stretched arch all the way from the front fender to the taillights. As the sill line, by contrast, moves up slightly to the rear in a slow and gentle curve, the distance between the character and sill lines becomes smaller around the rear wheel arches. The flare of the fender around the wheel also serves to give the character line extra tension in both an upward and outward direction.

The front view also shows a significant distinction from the 3 Series Sedan and Sports Wagon. The contours of the hood as well as the design of the front air dam and headlights give the new BMW 3 Series Coupe a particularly low and sporty look. The powerdome on the hood foretells the performance potential which lies beneath. Its lines follow a powerful silhouette extending all the way from the A-pillars to the outside corners of the BMW kidney grill.

The kidney grille, a typical feature of every BMW, stands out from the surfaces around it. Interaction with the three-dimensional kidney frame creates a look of power and unique style.

The headlight units on the new BMW 3 Series Coupe also have a unique look. With the hood extending beyond the headlights as such, the characteristic four round headlights appear to have been cut-off at the top creating a sense of powerful, concentrated focus.

The new 3 Series Coupe will come standard in the U.S. with xenon adaptive headlights, accented by BMW's corona light rings. The corona light rings not only serve as daytime running lights, but also draw attention to BMW's characteristic four round headlights, making this new Coupe instantly recognizable as a BMW, day or night.

The design of taillights is also unique to the new 3 Series Coupe. Integrated flush into the body of the car, the lights are split into two sections and extend all the way up to the trunk lid, blending with the character lines from the side profile. Horizontal LED taillights give the car an unmistakable look at night. The horizontally flowing lines accentuate the wide track and low stance of the new Coupe.

The designers' objective was to give the new 3 Series Coupe a balanced and harmonious look. The traditional "Hofmeister kink" at the bottom edge of the C-pillar now extends at an even more distinct angle into the shoulder line. To further accentuate this flow of lines, the window accent surround is now made in one single piece.

The exterior mirrors have been specifically designed and matched to the unique character of the new 3 Series Coupe. The contours of the mirrors reflect the profile lines while the mirrors blend seamlessly with the car's overall design.

The emphasis on individual style, dynamic performance and exclusivity continues within the interior. Horizontal lines dominate the surfaces on and around the instrument panel which blend with the lines of the center console and door panels to give the interior a light but dynamic feel. In true BMW fashion the instrument cluster and key controls are angled toward the driver. Controls for the climate control as well as the audio and navigation systems are within easy reach of the front passenger. Given that the new Coupe is a four passenger car, the rear seat passengers are treated to a storage compartment between the rear seats.

An elegant ambience is created in the interior by special lighting and switches with a premium look and feel. The light contour edge on the door and side panels, which runs from the door pillar all the way to the rear passenger area, creates a particularly warm, indirect lighting effect. Controls and switches used frequently by the driver and passengers such as the door handles and gearshift are finished in high quality metallic trim for an elegant appearance as well as a premium tactile experience.

Inline six-cylinder engines enter new dimensions of performance.

The first impression the new BMW 3 Series Coupe delivers is one of stylish elegance and powerful dynamics. Its long hood reflects BMW's longstanding tradition of inline six-cylinder engines.

The new BMW 3 Series Coupe will arrive in the U.S. with a choice of two six-cylinder engines including the world's first inline six with twin turbos, high precision fuel injection, and an all-aluminum crankcase. It is the most powerful engine within BMW's wide range of inline six driving machines that does not wear an "M" badge. This brand-new version develops maximum output of 300 hp in US-spec from 3.0 liters and generates peak torque of 300 lb-ft for powerful acceleration in any situation.

The combination of turbocharging and direct gasoline fuel injection offers a new dimension to efficient dynamics. Featuring high-precision fuel injection, the engine boasts a highly sophisticated and advanced direct fuel injection system. In true BMW fashion this results in outstanding performance combined with a significant reduction of fuel consumption.

A further advantage of turbocharging is that this is the most economical option to boost engine power and performance. For example, the turbocharged inline six weighs approximately 150 lbs less than an equally powerful eight-cylinder displacing 4.0 liters. And this lower weight means a significant advantage not only in fuel economy, but also in balancing the weight distribution of the overall car.

This new high-performance engine gives the light, aerodynamically sculpted Coupe truly outstanding acceleration and flexibility on the road. The twin turbo powerplant in the BMW 335i Coupe develops its power and performance much more spontaneously than a turbocharged engine of conventional design. Thanks to their lower inertia, the two small turbochargers build up pressure much faster than a single, large turbocharger, thus eliminating even the slightest turbo "lag".

At the same time the new engine offers all the smoothness and refinement which has made BMW's award-winning inline sixes so admired. Last but certainly not least, the impressive increase in power on the twin turbo engine versus a conventional normally aspirated six-cylinder comes without any significant increase in fuel consumption.

Featuring two turbochargers each supplying compressed air to three cylinders, the new turbocharged engine offers a new standard of spontaneity and responsiveness. Peak torque of 300 lb-ft comes smoothly and without delay, extending over a wide speed range from 1,400 - 5,000 rpm.

On the road, this power and torque result in outstanding performance. The 335i Coupe accelerates from 0 - 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds. This sense of urgency continues all the way to the electronically-limited top speed of 150 mph, when equipped with sport package.

This extremely efficient increase in power and performance is attributable in large part to gasoline direct injection. The high-precision fuel injection concept developed by BMW ensures a measurable advantage in fuel economy, without limiting the dynamic qualities of the engine.

To enhance this efficiency to an even higher level, the turbochargers are made of a particularly heat-resistant material which makes them immune to high exhaust gas temperatures in the interest of a fuel-efficient combustion process particularly under full load. As a result, the twin turbo technology in the BMW 335i Coupe represents a significant achievement in terms of both performance and fuel economy. The advantages over a conventional turbocharged engine are not only clearly measurable, but also easy to feel on the road.

BMW's new twin-turbo inline six is making its debut in the new 335i Coupe. One cannot overlook the new 328i Coupe with its normally-aspirated inline six-cylinder engine. This is the latest model to take advantage of BMW's weight-saving blend of magnesium and aluminum for the crankcase. The cylinder head cover and the bedplate are also made of aluminum. Fully variable Valvetronic valve management, an electric coolant pump and a fully controlled oil pump are features which serve to enhance the 328i Coupe's efficiency and responsiveness.

The new engine in the 328i Coupe offers 230 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. With

0 - 60 mph acceleration in just 6.2 seconds, this new "entry-level" Coupe is quicker than the previous top-of-the-line 330Ci Coupe.

Both models come standard with a six-speed manual gearbox for the pure driving enthusiast. For those who prefer an automatic a six-speed STEPTRONIC automatic is available. When ordered with the available sport package on the 335i Coupe, steering wheel mounted shift paddles are included, maximizing the sporting potential of the automatic.

The new six-speed STEPTRONIC automatic uses an innovative torque converter and enhanced management software to improve shifting responsiveness. The response time of the automatic transmission on the new BMW 3 Series Coupe is down by approximately 40 per cent compared with a conventional automatic transmission. While fast, responsive gear changes can make driving more fun, the optimized selection of the appropriate gear for all driving conditions helps to reduce fuel consumption. This new automatic is a textbook example of BMW's pursuit of Efficient Dynamics.

Chassis and suspension: where power becomes performance.

Even with great looks and outstanding performance, it would not be a BMW Coupe if it did not also offer equally outstanding handling and responsiveness.

The new 3 Series Coupe offers class-leading agility through a combination of significantly enhanced dynamic potential on one hand, with the most sophisticated chassis control and assistance systems on the other. Together they provide a margin of safety for any situation in which the car might reach the limits of driving physics. In other words, the driver and passengers in a BMW 3 Series Coupe enjoy superior safety at all speeds.

Traditional rear-wheel drive and a near 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution give the new BMW 3 Series Coupe ideal qualities for optimum driving dynamics. This, in combination with the high-tech suspension, enables the driver to convert the power and performance of the engine into an exhilarating driving experience. Boasting a double-pivot front suspension with spring struts made almost entirely of aluminum in combination with a five-link suspension at the rear, the new BMW 3 Series Coupe has the most advanced and sophisticated suspension in its class.

Reinforcement and support elements on the underfloor of the car serve to optimize the stiffness of the chassis which enables the suspension to work with the highest possible degree of precision. Interacting with the low centre of gravity and the specific set-up of the shock absorbers, the chassis and suspension work in perfect balance.

BMW's rack-and-pinion steering has been widely praised for its precision and feedback and the steering in the new 3 Series Coupe is no exception. For the ultimate balance between agility at lower speeds and stability at higher speeds, BMW's innovative Active Steering will be available. By adjusting the steering ratio, steering angle and power assistance to the speed of the car, Active Steering enables the driver to maneuver the 3 Series Coupe with minimum effort when parking and keep the car precisely on track at higher speeds.

The high-performance brake system requires 17-inch wheels to match the larger diameter of the brake discs which ensure outstanding stopping power and deceleration. Brake performance is further enhanced by BMW's latest Dynamic Stability Control. Introduced on the 3 Series Sedan, BMW's latest DSC incorporates several new functions. For example, DSC works to counteract the slightest brake fading effect even at extremely high brake temperatures by increasing brake pressure accordingly. This ensures maximum brake power even under the toughest conditions, without requiring the driver to exert any higher pressure.

Brake Standby positions the brakes closer to the discs after sudden lift off of the accelerator pedal to further reduce stopping distances in an emergency. Dry Braking, in turn, optimizes brake performance in the wet by using the brake pads to periodically dry the brake discs. Dynamic Brake Control automatically maximizes brake pressure whenever required in an emergency stop. Start-Off Assistant briefly holds the car when setting off on an uphill grade.

In a 3 Series Coupe equipped with Active Steering, DSC helps keep the car stable and under control when applying the brakes on surfaces varying in their frictional coefficient. DSC corrects the steering quickly and precisely for optimum control.

Dynamic Traction Control is another feature of DSC. Activation of DTC raises the threshold for intervention by the brakes, enabling the driver of a BMW 3 Series Coupe to set off smoothly on low friction surfaces such as snow. A benefit of DTC for the enthusiast is that it allows slight, easily controllable slip on the drive wheels even on a dry surface.

Of course, as in all BMWs, the driver also has the option to completely deactivate DSC in the new 3 Series Coupe.

BMW's intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system will be available as an alternative to rear-wheel drive for those who need an extra measure of traction with BMW responsiveness. Acknowledged as the most sophisticated and responsive of all-wheel drive systems, BMW xDrive allows the new 3 Series Coupe driver to enjoy the ultimate driving experience in all types of weather and driving. xDrive not only distributes power to each of the four wheels as road conditions require, it partners with DSC to play an active role in helping to stabilize the vehicle at the onset of oversteer or understeer. It will be available this fall in the 328xi Coupe.

The new BMW 3 Series Coupe comes standard with runflat tires for both models. Featuring the most advanced failsafe running qualities, these tires allow the driver to continue for up to 150 miles even under complete loss of pressure. The standard Tire Pressure Monitor gives plenty of warning and alerts the driver when the pressure of any tire falls 30 percent below the ideal level.

Ultra-modern body structure: lower weight, greater safety, improved responsiveness.

The new BMW 3 Series Coupe is light, strong and stable at once. Its structure is tailored to improve agility, safety and comfort while also contributing to overall vehicle efficiency.

Low vehicle weight and a high standard of torsional body stiffness is also crucial to the car's agility. In the event of a collision, the use of high-strength steel in critical areas, together with the exactly defined deformation zones, ensures effective absorption and, respectively, transfer of forces acting on the body of the car.

Reinforced B-pillars are a particularly impressive example of the high standard of development and excellence in design that the new BMW 3 Series Coupe has achieved, with a tubular structure throughout the B-pillars featured for the first time for added strength. This tubular reinforcement is made of ultra-strong steel in a warm-molding process and is heat-treated for top quality while still in the mold. The reinforcement tube is variably contoured in its cross-section, exactly matching the space available. Together with the crash box tailored to the loads, which act on the body, this ensures maximum safety.

The choice of materials and the arrangement of components at other points on the body also serve to optimize crash safety. The various properties of different types of steel and other materials are used to best effect. The space available for deformation on the new BMW 3 Series Coupe is used to minimize even the slightest impairment of the passenger cell. In a head-on collision, for example, dynamic deformation areas at the front keep impact energy away from the bulkhead and, accordingly, from the car's footwells. In the event of a side-impact collision, the specially designed floor assembly ensures controlled transfer of forces acting on the car to the opposite side of the body.

The bulkhead support is made of innovative multi-phase steel offering outstanding strength and stability even on thin-gauge panels. Efficient interaction of the doors, the reinforced b-pillars, the seat structure and the instrument panel between the A-pillars serves likewise to maximize the strength of the side structure. The consequences of a collision from the rear are minimized by longitudinal carrier bars, a wide range of reinforcement elements, as well as the extra-strong luggage compartment floor panel, rear panel and side walls. Stable pillars and crossbars also help protect the passenger area in a rollover.

Naturally, BMW's safety engineers sought from the start to fully maintain the passenger cell as a safe environment even in the most severe crash impact. Centrally masterminded restraint and support systems within the passenger compartment ensure individual occupant safety tailored for any contingency. The frontal, hip, side airbags along with curtain-type Head Protection System, belt latch tensioners and belt force limiters are activated by sensor-controlled electronic safety systems as a function of the type and severity of a collision. With its robust body enhanced by a wide range of active and passive safety features, the new BMW 3 Series Coupe meets all requirements for optimum results in all crash tests.

With active driving calling for optimum visibility at night, the new BMW 3 Series Coupe comes standard in the U.S. with xenon adaptive headlights. Light rods in the rear light clusters stand out distinctly for a significant improvement of safety in the dark.

Whether in the dark or during the day, two-stage adaptive brake lights make an important contribution in enabling following drivers to recognize a dangerous situation well in advance. Whenever the driver applies the brakes particularly hard, and when the ABS function is activated, light intensity in the two-stage taillights is increased accordingly, prompting drivers following from behind to brake harder, too.

Impressive standard and optional equipment

The list of comfort features boasted as standard equipment in the new BMW 3 Series Coupe is just as long and impressive as the list of safety elements. Particularly in the area of top-quality audio, navigation and telematic solutions, BMW offers optional high-tech concepts originally developed for the most outstanding luxury performance cars.

Here again, the focus is on the actual driving experience. The seating position at the rear is lower than in the Sedan, for example, gives the car's occupants optimum headroom despite the low roof line of the Coupe. At the same time not only the driver and front passenger, but also the rear passengers will immediately feel and enjoy excellent side support.

The door handle trim, gearshift lever cover and vent grille adjusters, as well as the decorative trim in the leather sports steering wheel all come in Pearl Gray chrome surface finish developed exclusively for the new BMW 3 Series Coupe. The starter button is also finished in this material.

Through its design and configuration, the cockpit emphasizes the sporting and driver-oriented character of BMW's new Coupe. Taking a seat behind the wheel, the driver will immediately focus on a newly designed instrument cluster which includes an oil temperature gauge positioned below the tachometer.

Buckling up in the new BMW 3 Series Coupe, both the driver and front passenger benefit from the newly developed belt feeder arm: The seat belt integrated in the B-pillar, moved back in typical coupe fashion, is automatically "delivered" to the driver and front passenger once they close the door and once the key has been inserted into the ignition slot. Connected to the seat occupancy detector, the passenger-side belt feeder arm is only activated when the front passenger has actually taken a seat. With the belt delivery unit housed conveniently within the side panels, this new system does not impair the elegant look of the interior.

Access to the two seats at the rear has been made even easier. The lever for releasing the seat position is fitted in perfect ergonomic arrangement at the top on the outside of the backrest.

The new BMW 3 Series Coupe was conceived from the start as a four-seater. Comfort for rear seat passengers is further enhanced by the center console which includes individual storage boxes with a cover on top, additional air outlet vents and footwell lights.

The world of the BMW Coupes: combining traditional and new values

The mission to develop a coupe has always been a particularly demanding but interesting challenge for the automotive engineer. After all, the driver opting for a coupe is a truly discerning driver looking for the ultimate driving experience. With this in mind, BMW has succeeded time and again over the years in meeting the great demands made of the coupe buyer while, at the same time, consistently resetting the benchmark in this segment.

The coupe has a long tradition at BMW. Even back in the 1930s, the BMW 327 was lauded as a truly outstanding two-seater and remains a legend to this day. Even back then, the coupe was widely appreciated as a particularly sporting grand tourer with two doors and a fixed roof.

These fundamental features remain virtually unchanged to this day. The lines typical of a coupe combine a long and sleek front section with a dynamic roof line tapering out gently to the rear. Unlike a thoroughbred sports car, the typical coupe offers ample space for more than just two occupants as well as a separate luggage compartment providing room for ample luggage.

The new BMW 3 Series Coupe takes up proven traditions in terms of drive technology as well. Developing a coupe, BMW always seeks to enter new dimensions in driving dynamics. This is why particularly powerful engines and new chassis control systems regularly make their debut in a coupe. Now the new BMW 3 Series Coupe is continuing this tradition with BMW's new twin-turbo inline six featuring high-precision fuel injection.

As a modern interpretation of a traditional car concept, the new BMW 3 Series Coupe is unquestionably a very special car. Even more than its predecessor, the new 3 Series Coupe stands out from its Sedan counterpart through its distinctive design. In the process the new BMW 3 Series Coupe ensures a particularly refined combination of active driving pleasure and visual appeal.

The new BMW 3 Series Coupe is, above all, a BMW designed to deliver the ultimate driving experience. The all new BMW 335i Coupe and 328i Coupe will arrive in U.S. showrooms this September.

Disney/Pixar's "CARS Road Trip 06" presented by State Farm will bring the "CARS" stars to life through interactive experiences. The tour, which was designed and will be managed by the Becker Group, will cross the country with stops in over 40 cities and be highlighted by an appearance at the World Premiere for Disney/Pixar's "CARS" on May 26 in Charlotte, NC at the Lowe's Motor Speedway. The cars will ride in style via a special truck inspired by the character Mack, which will be provided by Mack Trucks, Inc. "CARS" tells the story of Lightning McQueen, a hotshot rookie racecar driven to succeed, who discovers that life is about the journey, not the finish line, when he finds himself unexpectedly detoured in the sleepy Route 66 town of Radiator Springs. The all-star vocal cast includes free-wheeling performances by Paul Newman, Owen Wilson, Bonnie Hunt, "Larry the Cable Guy", Tony Shalhoub, Michael Keaton, George Carlin, Katherine Helmond, Cheech Marin, John Ratzenberger, Paul Dooley, Michael Wallis, Darrell Waltrip, Richard Petty, Jenifer Lewis and Jeremy Piven. UK Drivers Keeping Eyes on GPS not the Road!

It appears as if British drivers are trusing what they see on the GPS screen more then what is through their windshiled. The British town of Luckington has been pulling on average two cars a day from the river Avon. Apparently they are following their GPS recommended route dispite the fact that the bridge is out. Despite warning signs on boths sides of the road people are continuing to drive into the river. When you ask what happened, they say, 'My sat-nav told me it was this way,'" one resident told The Times.

Julie Jackson, 45, of Carterton, Oxfordshire, and her mother, Delcie Fielder, 70, had to abandon their Rover 220 in mid-stream after “we heard this gurgling sound and water came right into the car, covering our feet”.

Audi pulls R10 from ALMS; R8 will race once again

Audi R10 ALMS
lemans.pngWhen Audi unveiled the R10 early this year it was made clear - Audi's goal is to win the 2006 24 hours of Le Mans with the diesel powered R10. Today Audi showed just how serious they were about this goal by pulling the R10's from American Le Mans Series and returning them to Europe to focus all efforts in preparing for the 24 hours in June.

This comes as a surprise since they've only run one ALMS race which they won; becoming the first diesel power race car to win an endurance race. To try and help make up for the lack of R10's in the ALMS races Audi will be campaigning a single Audi R8 for Sebring winners Allan McNish and Dindo Capello which allows them to gain championship points while the two R10s compete at the 24 hours of Le Mans.

The R10's will miss three ALMS races but will hopefully return for the July 15th event in Utah.

Funkmaster Flex Ford Sweepstakes

Funkmaster Flex Ford
ford.pngFord is teaming up with deejay and television host, Funkmaster Flex to giveaway a custom Ford Fusion and F-150.

The Funkmaster will be hitting the road this summer with his Ford rides on the Funkmaster Flex 2006 Custom Car & Bike Show. The Fusion and F150 will be given away at the end of the tour with winners being selected from onsite and online entries that will be collected through out the summer.

After last year's projects, including two sweepstakes vehicles and an "over-the-top" custom red Ford Fusion shown at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show, Flex wanted to take these latest rides in a different direction. In January, he made a visit to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit to meet with Ford designers and explore his dreams for his latest projects.

"In 2005, I saw some poppin' trends happening in the whips I saw on my car show tour, at SEMA and the Detroit auto show," said Flex. "With my latest Fusion and F-150, I wanted to incorporate these trends, along with some new ideas."

Funkmaster Flex Ford
2006 Funkmaster Flex Fusion Giveaway

* Incorporating the chrome side mirrors
* Adding an additional chrome bar to the Fusion’s dominant 3-bar grille
* Fitting 20-inch chrome wheels

With a bold design and more chrome accents than any vehicle in its class, Fusion brings style to the midsize sedan. “I love chrome, you can never have enough chrome,” he said. Flex is looking to add even more chrome to his next project including:

For the exterior paint scheme Flex wanted to express some trends he noticed happening with the color orange and blue. He explored putting these color elements together with modern asymmetrical pinstripes that ran through the grille and rolled back across the hood, roof and rear-deck-lid. He accented this design with orange racing stripes on side of the car with the directional marker lights. Finally, he added some of his personality to the car by adding the Funkmaster Flex logo.

Flex plans on transforming the Fusion by enhancing its aggressive stands and driving stand. He will incorporate a 3dCarbon ® body kit used with his SEMA Fusion, coil-over springs and performance low-profile tires.

Once inside the cockpit, Flex will complement the exterior with a signature interior. It will include an impressive line of audio and video equipment.

2006 Funkmaster Flex F-150 Giveaway

Flex’s design inspiration for the F-150 came from some classic 70’s movies.

“I grew up watching these pictures like ‘Mean Streets’ and ‘Vanishing Point’ as a kid and I wanted to see what these gritty urban themes would look like in a modern tough truck like the F-150,” said Flex.

The F-150 features a two-tone black and red paint scheme with an orange pinstripe. Flex chose a similar red color that he discovered at the North American International Auto in Detroit on the hot Mazda Kabura concept. Flex then plans to add a mean streets style side graphic, which depicts a dark urban city landscape.

The truck will incorporate a new 3d Carbon ® body kit that will lower the front valence and side skirts. It will ride on 24-inch wheels and low-profile performance tires. To complete the Flex style, expect a signature one-of-a-kind interior and an impressive line of audio and video equipment.

Bob Lutz Showing the new Saturn Sky Redline

General Motors has released a video of Chairman Bob Lutz showing the new Saturn Sky Redline at the New York Auto Show.

Lutz talks about the improved design, performance, and overall characteristics that will make the Saturn Sky Redline so appealing to customers. Lutz makes a point of showing that the Saturn Sky Redline is a car with more features and refinement then cars costing much more.

Scion unveils FUSE Coupe Concept

Scion FUSE
toyota.pngScion unveiled the all-new FUSE Sports Coupe Concept at the 2006 New York International Auto Show.

Developed by Calty Design Research, Toyota's North American design studio located in Newport Beach, Calif. and Scion's Advanced Product Strategy Team, and built by Five Axis of Huntington Beach, Calif., the all-new FUSE was designed to be the new Scion sports coupe icon. Its goal was to push the limits of a coupe concept by combining entertainment, digital technology, and versatility into one sinister looking package. Most importantly, its styling makes a visual statement about its intention to expand the performance envelope among affordable, entry-level sport coupes.

"The idea of the all-new FUSE Sports Coupe is a reflection of the boundless limits and creative envelope that embodies all the vital personalization components of a Scion product," said Mark Templin, Scion vice president. "Since the launch of Scion three years ago, designers have learned a great deal about what inspires and motivates Scion buyers through its unique vehicle lineup and instilled them into the FUSE."

Scion FUSE
The exterior of the FUSE was the conception of Calty designers Alex Shen and Bob Mochizuki, who were determined to create a strong performance statement. Inspiration came from the "HAKO" super GT racing cars of Japan, commonly known as the JGTC series. From the side, the FUSE has a low, aggressive stance with a race helmet-inspired wraparound window that provides a panoramic view. The visor-like wraparound windshield is balanced by a strong C-pillar, adding a sense of security and protection.

At first glance, the menacing presence and dark undertones of the FUSE subtly hint there is more than meets the eye. The front of the FUSE glares at you with slim, high-mounted, deep-set headlamps communicating a serious and aggressive attitude. A massive rectangular air intake hints at potential for a large intercooler.

From the back, wide-body rear flares span the entire rear mass, encasing deep-set vertical taillamps. The dual exhaust also serves as fog and reverse lamps as lighting encircles each exhaust tip. Wheels are 20-inch custom-machined with LED's on the end of each spoke, which illuminate as turn indicators.
Scion FUSE
On top, two horizontal glass panels run the length of the roof, and slide open in both directions offering all occupants access to a personal sunroof. The rear window tapers down to a speed-activated spoiler.

True to the Scion tradition, the FUSE is equipped with extreme levels of personalization accessories. Headlights and fog lamps can be programmed to illuminate in various colors. Videos or images can be downloaded and viewed on a concealed LCD screen behind the front badge. And then there is the interior.

Calty interior designers Alan Schneider and Ichirou Mukai used the long wheelbase and high beltline of the FUSE to help create the interior theme, which revolves around providing the driver with an intense driving environment and occupants an intimate atmosphere. The activation of a small key-shaped sensor unhinges butterfly doors that open to reveal an interior that merges technology, function and racing inspired elements in an asymmetrical pentagon where the driver is positioned at the apex of the surround.

The influence of the "racing tub" in the overall design is obvious. It provides a unique contrast that highlights the floating technical elements of the interior. A drive-by-wire steering interface combines influences from race cars and video game controllers in one innovative driver module. A media station that runs the length of the dash is the focal point of the cabin. Passengers can watch movies, play video games, or do both, with dual display 10.5-inch monitors.

The FUSE interior concept is referred to as "one plus stuff." The design focuses on the driver by offering surprising versatility in the form of three interior arrangements: video, driving and cargo configurations. In its video mode, the front passenger seat folds flat and serves as a table, or footrest. Occupants can utilize video screens or take advantage of wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) connectivity and instant message their friends. In driving mode, the video screens turn off and a multi-informational display is used for driver information.

Utility is maximized in a cargo mode where the front passenger seat and rear seats fold down to form a flat surface. And, multi-functioning rear cargo access allows stowage of larger items. The FUSE cabin seats four comfortably, however when the car is parked, additional room is available with a tailgate that converts to provide outdoor seating. A sweep of the foot over an infrared sensor located on the lip of the rear bumper opens the rear tailgate and sliding hatch, allowing the tailgate to drop down into a curb-high bench. This surprising seating arrangement is paired with rear foldout speakers for an unexpected social environment. Enhancing the social scene is a detachable drink cooler with a retractable handle, which is integrated into the rear center console.

Additional features include subtle accent lighting on the seats, doors and overhead lining. Deeply contoured seats are upholstered with soft-to-the-touch "Mythos" fabric that wraps around passengers for maximum comfort. Finally, audio, video and HVAC systems are easily controlled by a "vehicle system/communication interface" touch control board that is similar in appearance to a telephone keypad.

"The FUSE is a styling exercise that presents a discussion starting point for Scion owners and other Gen Y consumers with an eye towards a versatile sports coupe," said Templin. "Like previous Scion concepts, the FUSE delivers a unique statement about what the Scion brand is all about and where it is headed."

Jeep Unveils First Four door Wrangler - 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
jeep.pngFeaturing a one-of-a-kind, four-door open-air design, the all-new 2007 Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited expands the Jeep experience to new dimensions. With room for five adult passengers — a Wrangler first — and the most cargo space ever offered in a Wrangler, the Unlimited combines class-leading off-road capability with everyday practicality.

The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited grows to mid-size SUV proportions, offering even more comfort and space, even more versatility, even more open-air options, even more off-road capability, even more on-road refinement, even more convenience and safety features, and even more power and fuel efficiency.

"Combining four-door convenience with Wrangler's unique open-air design and unmatched off-road capability, the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is the only four-door convertible on the market," said George Murphy, Senior Vice President – Global Brand Marketing, Chrysler Group. "Wrangler Unlimited expands the Jeep experience and core values — freedom, adventure, mastery and authenticity — to a broader range of customers who always wanted a Wrangler, but also more space and versatility."

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited features a 116-inch wheelbase, achieved by adding 20.6 inches to the standard all-new 2007 Wrangler's 95.4-inch wheelbase. The additional length allows for a larger rear seat that features three seating positions, as well as more hip, leg and shoulder room. In addition, Wrangler Unlimited offers nearly triple the rear cargo space.

Offered in two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited utilizes the same five-link solid-axle suspension configuration as the standard 2007 Jeep Wrangler. The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited also retains Wrangler's coveted removable full-framed or half doors, exposed hinges, fold-down windshield and innovative removable and convertible tops.

The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited will be offered in three models: Wrangler Unlimited X, Sahara and Rubicon, and will feature hundreds of different top, door and windshield combinations. In addition, nine exterior colors and available 16-, 17-, or 18-inch wheels will be offered.
Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
Even More Space, Comfort and Versatility
While maintaining its legendary off-road capability, the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited features a spacious interior that takes comfort and convenience to new lengths. Its 102.9 cu. ft. of total interior space provides room for five adult passengers and delivers more cargo storage and seating configurations than ever before.

"No other vehicle in the world can replicate the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's unique combination of best-in-class off-road capability, open-air fun and everyday convenience and versatility," said Mike Donoughe, Vice President – Body-on-frame Product Team. "Whether it's used as a daily driver or for extreme rock crawling, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has the ability to turn mountains into mole hills, while comfortably carrying passengers and gear."

Providing easy entry and exit, all four doors on the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited are front-hinged, with inside and outside handles, and windows that travel all the way down. Rear doors feature exposed forged hinges, open a full 90 degrees, and provide a 26.5-inch wide opening.

The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited offers rear-seat passengers a 33-inch front-to-rear couple distance and 37.2 inches of legroom. Rear seats split 60/40, and easily fold flat, creating 83 cu. ft. of total storage volume.

With rear seats in the upright position, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited features 46.4 cu. ft. of cargo space behind the rear seat, providing more cargo space than the 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser, 2006 Hummer H3 and 2006 Nissan Xterra. A new lockable underfloor storage area secures personal items out of sight.

Identical to the standard all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited features an all-new instrument panel, center stack and high-back front bucket seats. The front-seat area provides 54.6 cu. ft. of space, providing 5.1 inches more shoulder room and 4.6 inches more hip room compared to 2006 Jeep Wrangler models.

Even More Open-air Fun for Even More Passengers
An all-new, three-piece modular hardtop — Jeep's Freedom Top TM — features three removable panels for a variety of open-air driving configurations. The left- and right-front passenger panels may be stored inside the vehicle, while the rear section can remain in place or be removed separately.

"Whether removing one of the Freedom Top panels or flipping back the Sunrider soft top, the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited provides owners the flexibility to conveniently experience open-air driving in less than 30 seconds," said Donoughe.

The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited also features a standard Sunrider TM soft top, which includes a "sun roof" feature as well as the full top-down option. This soft top provides a second open-air option by folding the soft top back completely over the first- and second-row occupants, creating a 55x60-inch sun roof opening — an opening 30 inches longer than the standard 2007 Jeep Wrangler Sunrider top.

Even More Legendary Off-road Capability
Even with the additional 20.6-inch wheelbase length, the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited achieves off-road leadership among all SUVs in its class. Superior ground clearance combined with short front and rear overhangs enable Jeep Wrangler Unlimited to navigate the most rigorous off-road trails.

The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited features a best-in-class approach angle of 44.4 degrees, breakover angle of 20.8 degrees, and best-in-class 40.5 degree departure angle — all more than worthy of negotiating extreme obstacles. Additionally, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited offers an available electronic-disconnecting front stabilizer bar — Active Sway Bar System (ASBS) — delivering a 28-percent increase in wheel travel.

"A long list of proven 4x4 hardware — essential components among off-road enthusiasts — underscores the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's off-road capabilities," said Donoughe. "From beefy axles and heavy-duty transfer cases with low gear ratios to locking differentials, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has more mettle than any other vehicle, and more than enough to conquer a variety of off-road challenges, right out of the box."

The highly capable underpinnings of Jeep Wrangler Unlimited X and Sahara models include an enhanced Dana 30 front axle and Dana 44 rear axle — each featuring larger pinion shafts, pinion bearings and axle joints for increased durability compared to its predecessor. Engineered to take on the most demanding trails, the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon model features enhanced heavy-duty Dana 44 front and rear axles, which also feature larger pinion shafts, pinion bearings and axle joints.

Providing armor for the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's underbody components are three skid plates — protecting the fuel tank, transfer case and automatic transmission oil pan. Two-wheel-drive Jeep Wrangler Unlimited models feature one skid plate to protect the fuel tank.

Four-wheel-drive Jeep Wrangler Unlimited X and Sahara models feature the second-generation Command-Trac® NV241, part-time, two-speed transfer case, featuring a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. An optional Trac-Lok® limited-slip rear differential provides extra torque and grip during low-traction situations.

The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon model features an Off-Road Rock-Trac TM NV241 two-speed transfer case with a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio, as well as electric front- and rear-axle lockers, Active Sway Bar System and 32-inch B.F. Goodrich Off-road tires.

Even More On-road Refinement
The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited features an even more refined on-road experience courtesy of its 116-inch wheelbase, all-new 100-percent stiffer frame, 50-percent stiffer body and refined five-link coil suspension. In addition, new steering and suspension geometry provides precise ride and handling characteristics, while new sound-deadening techniques reduce cabin noise by more than 20 percent.

Ride balance in the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited achieves minimal body lean when cornering and braking due to the five-link coil suspension's new upper and lower control arms and full-width forged-steel track bars. Also, lower suspension spring rates provide a softer, more comfortable on-road ride.

Standard on the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited X model, low-pressure twin-tube shock absorbers are tuned to match softer coil rates, achieving optimum balance between advanced on-road handling and rugged off-road capability. Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara and Rubicon models feature standard high-pressure monotube shocks, utilizing Low Speed Tunable (LST) valve technology.

The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's new recirculating-ball steering configuration features a robust cross-car steering linkage system, providing the stiffest possible steering linkage in a solid-axle vehicle. A decreased scrub radius significantly reduces steering wheel inputs, such as bump steer from uneven road surfaces.

Standard on the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is an Electronic Stability Program (ESP), which aids the driver in maintaining vehicle directional stability in severe driving maneuvers on any type of surface. ESP features three modes — "full on," "full off" and "partial on."

Even More Powerful and Fuel-efficient Engine
New on all 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited models is a 3.8-liter overhead valve V-6 engine, with 205 horsepower and 240 lb.-ft. of torque — producing more horsepower and torque than its predecessor with improved fuel economy. A standard six-speed manual transmission or an available four-speed automatic transmission is offered.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited features a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. and an optional towing package that includes a 4.10 axle ratio, class III trailer hitch and two front tow hooks.

For key diesel markets outside North America, a diesel engine will also be available — for the first time in a Jeep Wrangler — with a five-speed manual transmission.

Even More Authentic Jeep Design
The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited takes on a radical four-door open-air design with Jeep-signature design cues — classic round headlamps, seven-slot grille, trapezoidal wheel flares and exposed forged hinges merged with Wrangler Unlimited's longer wheelbase, front-hinged rear doors, exposed B-pillar and larger sport bar — creating a stance that commands attention like no other Wrangler in its 65-year history.

"The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited extends Jeep design cues into a four-door, open-air form that is unmistakably Jeep Wrangler and unmistakably new," said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President – Design. "The Wrangler Unlimited's appearance is simple and pure, yet signals a new design approach to this familiar icon. Every angle reflects its boldly expanded posture and adventurous spirit, constructed in a head-turning silhouette that is authentic Jeep."

Several Jeep concept vehicles — the 1997 Jeep Dakar, 2004 Jeep Rescue and 2005 Jeep Gladiator — that explored the combination of added space and utility with Wrangler's rugged off-road character, inspired the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's design.

The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's 20.6-inch longer wheelbase with full-framed or half rear doors is encompassed by taut lines, sharp angles and planar surfaces, appearing not so much styled as constructed. The result is a design that is simple, strong and purpose-built, giving Wrangler Unlimited a military quality — upright and rugged, and imposing without being intimidating.

The interior design of the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited draws from the exterior, with a straightforward, purposeful, yet contemporary theme that delivers a new level of comfort, spaciousness and convenience. Featuring a Slate Gray or Khaki interior, the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited utilizes new grain patterns delivering a technical appearance with geometric themes, complementing its rugged exterior.

The instrument panel features an all-new analog instrument cluster, four round airflow registers, six speakers and a 32-percent-larger locking glove box. Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's tweeter speakers are located on top of the instrument panel and face each opposing occupant for optimal left- and right-channel clarity.

The all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's center stack provides easy-to-reach controls for audio system, HVAC, power window and Electronic Stability Program (ESP) switches. An available 368-watt Alpine stereo with optional navigation system is located at the top of the center stack for better visibility. Radios feature an auxiliary jack for portable MP3 compatibility.

Offering easy-to-use, comprehensive driving directions, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's available navigation system provides real-time guidance on local, city and highway roads throughout the United States and Canada. In addition, a trail feature leaves behind a virtual breadcrumb trail that shows where the vehicle has driven off-road, enabling the driver to retrace the route and return to the trailhead.

Even More Safety and Security Features
Like all Jeep vehicles, the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is designed to improve handling and accident avoidance, and provide protection. Jeep Wrangler Unlimited includes the highest level of safety features ever offered in the vehicle's history in order to provide customers the ability to safely "go anywhere, do anything."

Following are available safety and security features in the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited:

* Advanced Multi-stage Air Bag System: This system inflates with a force appropriate to the severity of an impact. It includes the occupant classification system (OCS)
* Anti-lock-braking System: Electronic sensors help detect impending wheel lockup. The standard ABS system offers improved steering control under extreme braking and/or slippery conditions
* Brake Assist: The vehicle senses a panic brake condition and applies maximum braking power, providing the shortest possible stopping distance
* Child Seat Anchor System: Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) make it easier to install compatible aftermarket child seats in the rear seat
* Electronic Roll Mitigation: A system that observes and monitors the vehicle speed and steering rate to estimate the potential for a rollover situation. If necessary, the engine torque is reduced and a short burst of full braking is applied to the appropriate wheel to immediately limit lateral force, providing improved roll stability
* Electronic Stability Program (ESP): ESP aids the driver in maintaining vehicle directional stability, providing oversteer and understeer control to maintain vehicle behavior on various road surfaces. This standard feature has three settings, allowing the driver more control over the vehicle during spirited driving
* Energy-absorbing Steering Column: Manual-adjust collapsing steering column includes two hydroformed coaxial tubes that move relative to each other, which allows the column to move forward and provide more energy absorption during an impact
* Occupant Classification System (OCS): Measures conditions for activation or deactivation of the passenger-side front air bag based upon the weight of the occupant
* Pretensioners: During an impact, the impact sensors initiate front seat belt pretensioners to immediately remove slack from seat belts, which reduces the forward movement of the occupant's head and torso
* Seat-mounted Side Air Bags: Available seat-mounted side air bags extend protection to driver and front passenger
* Side-impact Door Beams: Door beams are made of high-strength steel mounted in the vehicle's doors to help prevent passenger compartment intrusion

Hertz Shelby GT350H "Rent-A-Racer" - Offical Details

Hertz Mustang
ford.pngFord has released an offical statement and photos on it's partnership with Hertz on the Shelby/Hertz GT350H that was announced last month.

In a throwback to the famed Shelby GT350H "Rent-A-Racer" program from the 1960s, Ford Motor Company, Shelby Automobiles and The Hertz Corporation are partnering to produce a special run of performance-modified Ford Mustang GTs – designated Shelby GT-H, for "Hertz" – that will be available for rent later this spring exclusively through Hertz. Approximately 500 units will be available through the Hertz Fun Collection at select airport locations Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.

Forty years ago, Carroll Shelby and The Hertz Corporation came up with an ingenious plan to help get a batch of high-performance, special-edition Shelby Mustangs into the hands of rental customers who also happened to be car enthusiasts.

Hertz Mustang
Ford supplied the new Mustangs with V-8 engines and mostly automatic transmissions, Shelby added extra performance and style, and Hertz gave the public access to the kind of unique driving experience that one would normally only find on a racetrack. Today, the story of the Shelby/Hertz "Rent-A-Racer" is legendary and surviving Shelby GT350H Mustangs are among the most sought-after collector cars in the world.

To connect the magical past of the original Shelby GT350H with the modern capabilities of the new Ford Mustang, Shelby, Ford and Hertz have again teamed up, and – together with the Ford Racing Performance Group – have given the 2006 Ford Shelby GT-H a very classic, muscular look as well as some true performance credentials.

"Like the original Hertz cars, the Ford Shelby GT-H will be fun to drive," said Carroll Shelby, CEO of Shelby Automobiles, Inc. "We started with a terrific Mustang and modified it with some Ford go-fast parts and gave it a distinct look for Shelby-style driving. Whoever gets the opportunity to rent one of these unique cars will get an experience of a lifetime."
Hertz Fun Collection
Hertz Mustang
Further enhancing its position as a leader at U.S. airports in the leisure car rental market, Hertz launched its Fun Collection in January 2006. Featuring vehicles tailor-made for travelers seeking exciting driving experiences, the Fun Collection adds more entertainment to the driving experience as each car comes equipped with SIRIUS Satellite Radio.

The 2006 Ford Shelby GT-H Mustang will be available at select airport locations that feature the Hertz Fun Collection including Phoenix, Arizona; Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego and San Francisco, California; Denver, Colorado; Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando, Tampa and West Palm Beach, Florida; Maui and Honolulu, Hawaii, and Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition, the car will be available in Boston, Massachusetts; Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington.

With the addition of the Ford Shelby GT-H Mustang into the Fun Collection, Hertz now offers 36 models that can be specifically reserved, ranging from mid-size to luxury cars, convertibles to SUVs and is the only nationwide car rental company able to allow customers to reserve the specific make and model vehicles at the time of reservation. More than 8,000 Fun Collection vehicles are available at 18 major airport locations in the United States.
Hertz Mustang
"With 2006 marking the 40th anniversary of the Shelby GT350H joining the Hertz fleet, we’re thrilled to be bringing legendary Mustang driving excitement back to our rental customers," said Walt Seaman, staff vice president, Worldwide Fleet, Maintenance, and Car Sales Operations for The Hertz Corporation. "The Shelby GT-H is a fun, powerful Mustang to drive, and will be a special part of the Hertz Fun Collection. As all cars in the collection are reserved by exact make and model, customers can rest assured that when they reserve a Shelby GT-H Mustang to drive, they will receive the Shelby GT-H Mustang upon arrival."
Extra "Show"

Like its predecessor, the 2006 Ford Shelby GT-H will be instantly recognizable – thanks to several eye-catching styling enhancements that are so much a part of the Shelby Mustang heritage. First and foremost, each Shelby GT-H will wear Black exterior paint set off with Gold racing stripes, a hallmark of Hertz’s vehicle history dating all the way back to the 1920s.

While it’s true that the Shelby GT350H was eventually made available in other color combinations, the Black-and-Gold combo is often referred to as "Hertz colors" by most Mustang aficionados. Shelby’s traditional "Le Mans" dual overbody racing stripes are combined with a set of rocker stripes that include special "Shelby GT-H" nomenclature. Each car will also wear a Hertz Edition emblem on the front fenders, and feature Hertz Shelby GT-H sill plates and a numbered dash badge with Carroll Shelby’s signature inside the cockpit.

To give a hint of the Mustang GT 4.6-liter 3V V-8 engine’s added capability, the Ford Shelby GT-H is fitted with a custom Shelby Performance hood with pins, and a brushed aluminum grille with running horse emblem. A unique front fascia with integrated lower grille, as well as a set of body side scoops – reminiscent of classic Shelby Mustangs is incorporated for a distinct look. To further catch the enthusiast’s eye, the Mustang GT brakes are dressed up with painted calipers, which can be seen through the GT-H’s 17-inch aluminum wheels wearing P235/55ZR17 performance rubber.
Added "Go"

Ford Racing Performance Group is supplying its popular Power Pack (FR1) to add a genuine 25-horsepower Ford performance kick to the 300-horse Mustang GT 4.6L V-8/Five-speed automatic transmission powertrain and an increase of 10 lb.-ft. of torque. The package includes Ford Racing’s 90mm Cold Air kit, the Muffler Kit, a new X-pipe similar to the one used on the new Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang, a performance calibration and a cat-back performance exhaust for that throaty sound that will make this car unmistakably a Shelby Mustang GT-H.

"Any Mustang that traces its roots to a Shelby GT350H has to boast increased performance and handling over its factory stock configuration," said Cisco Codina, group vice president, Ford North America Marketing, Sales and Service. "Ford Racing’s involvement with niche performance Mustang builds like this Hertz project is a natural for us as well as for Hertz and Shelby."

To put that extra horsepower to the ground, the Ford Shelby GT-H also comes with the Ford Racing Handling Pack (FR3) installed, including special-tuned dampers inspired from the FR500C, lowering springs, sway bars and a strut tower brace – plus a Ford Racing 3.55:1 ratio rear axle assembly for extra off-the-line acceleration.

Ford Racing will be working hand-in-hand with engineers and technicians at Shelby Automobile’s assembly facility in Las Vegas during the build-out of the GT-H for delivery to Hertz. With total production expected to number only around 500 units exclusively destined for Hertz rental fleets across the country, this special-edition Ford Shelby GT-H is sure to give Hertz customers a truly exclusive driving experience like only Shelby and the Ford Mustang can deliver.

"This GT-H project has been terrific," said Amy Boylan, president, Shelby Automobiles Inc. "My team here at Shelby Automobiles is very excited with what we have put together with Ford, and Hertz – a pony that not only has a special look, but can really run, too. Those who get to rent a GT-H in the coming months will have the opportunity to enjoy a car that looks, accelerates, handles and sounds the way a high-performance Shelby-ized Ford Mustang should. It will prove lots of fun for Hertz customers looking for some real driving excitement."

Ford Mustang California Special

Ford Mustang GT/CS
ford.pngFord announced today a new version of the Mustang GT, called the "California Special".

The California Special is to be the first of several planned Mustang V-8 "Feature Cars". The California Special will be labeled the GT/CS and pays homage to the original California Special model that was produced in 1968.

The GT/CS will feature restyled front and rear fascias with classic side scoops and GT/CS stripes. Standard for the GT/CS will be Mustang GT's 18-inch polished aluminum wheels and performance tires. The dual exhaust tips will also be rolled and polished to give the rear a more finished look.

Read on for the full press release and more photos...

Ford Mustang GT/CS
Los Angeles, April 10 - Ever since Ford announced it was going to build a production version of the Shelby GT500 Concept, enthusiasts have been abuzz with speculation about what other specialty Mustangs were in the works. Would Ford bring back the Boss? Could they be contemplating another Mach 1? How about another Bullitt? Their wait is now over: While the competition scrambles once again to play catch-up to Ford, Mustang momentum continues to grow with the introduction of the uniquely styled, limited-edition 2007 Mustang GT/CS – or “California Special.”

The Mustang GT/California Special arrives in late summer as a full, stand-alone option package on the 2007 Mustang. Much like the 1968 GT/CS that offered Mustang buyers more aggressive styling that was “Inspired by the Shelby GT,” the new California Special also draws some cues from the 2007 Shelby. What’s more, it offers the kind of limited-production exclusivity that has made the original California Special such a big favorite with Mustang collectors over the years.
Ford Mustang GT/CS
The new Mustang has been a runaway sales success ever since it bolted out of the starting gate 18 months ago. Today, Ford's Mustang remains the hottest selling car in America. It's no secret that the upcoming Shelby GT500 has driven performance-hungry enthusiasts to Ford dealerships across the country in search of information on purchasing the most powerful factory Mustang ever produced. And all indications are that the GT500 will be yet another Mustang sales success. But the Mustang has always been about choice and meeting the customer's needs – and Ford Motor Company knows that there are customers who don't require the ultimate performance Mustang, yet still desire something special beyond the Mustang GT. The 2007 California Special fits the bill.

“ As a Mustang enthusiast and SVTOA Chapter Director, I’ve long known about the original California Special and the mystique that surrounds it, so when I was given the chance to work on the program, I jumped on it," said Mark Wilson, who works in Car Project Management at Ford’s Vehicle Personalization group, and is the program manager for the California Special. Mark is a true Mustang fanatic, he races is 1993 Cobra R and 2004 Mustang in the American V-8 Super Car Series. “I believe the 2007 GT/CS is true to the original car’s heritage, while also setting itself apart from the base Mustang GT with styling cues that clearly differentiate it from any angle.”

The GT/CS was originally a limited-production 1968 Mustang coupe fitted with Shelby Mustang dress-up pieces and sold only though dealerships in California. It was available with any engine, and either with or without the GT option. The 2007 California Special can be ordered as either a coupe or convertible and will be available though Ford dealerships across the country.

The 2007 version has an aggressive front fascia with an integrated chin spoiler that sits 1.5 inches lower than the Mustang GT to provide a larger air opening for increased cooling performance. Familiar “California Special” style bodyside racing stripes run from the front fenders across the doors and fade-out at the end of the door.

Out back, a unique rear fascia styled with less “tuck-in” features a lower air-diffuser design that is similar to the rear of the 2007 Shelby GT500 – itself inspired by the rear diffuser on the Ford GT supercar. As an added touch, the dual exhaust system on the new Mustang GT/CS sports bright, rolled tips for a cleaner, more refined appearance. The car will also come standard with the Mustang GT’s optional 18-inch polished aluminum wheels and performance tires. (Those seeking further differentiation can even add a hood scoop by ordering the GT Appearance Package.)

“We’ve taken the spirit behind the original Cal Special – a regional package that personalized the Mustang for the West Coast buyer – and created a more aggressive, customized Mustang for customers everywhere,” said Joe Siler, Design Manager, Ford Vehicle Personalization. “We think the result has all of the high-style flair of the original.”

Exclusive touches carry over to the inside of the new California Special, as well. Starting with the array of bright-polished and satin-aluminum finished items in the Interior Upgrade Package (which is required to order a Mustang GT/CS), the cabin comes dressed in either Dove or Parchment environments, including black leather seats with unique Cal Special Dove or Parchment “GT Leather” inserts. Plus, matching front floormats include special Mustang badging to further distinguish the GT/CS interior.

There’s even more style under the hood of the new California Special: The Mustang GT’s 300-horsepower 3-valve 4.6-liter V-8 gets treated to a unique engine cover that gives the engine compartment the kind of dressed-up look that you'd only expect to see at custom car show. (For those who may wish their GT/CS had a little more “go” along with all the extra “show,” the Ford Racing Performance Group offers several exciting parts packages to provide some additional kick. One popular choice is the Ford Racing Power Pack, which includes a 90mm Cold Air kit, a performance Muffler Kit and the special Ford Racing engine calibration – good for about 20 additional horsepower at the rear wheels. Visit www.fordracingparts.com for details.)

The 2007 Mustang GT/CS goes on sale later this summer. The GT Cal Special option package adds $1,895 to the price of a Mustang GT (available with either a five-speed manual or automatic transmission) with the requisite Premium and Interior Upgrade packages. Exterior color choices are limited to Redfire Metallic, Performance White, Vista Blue Metallic and Black. Valencia Yellow is to be added later in the model run. Production estimates have not been finalized, but the 2007 California Special is expected to surpass the sales total of its predecessor of nearly 40 years ago, when 4,325 copies of the GT/CS were sold.

Advertisements touting the ‘68 GT/CS exclaimed that “ California made it happen.” When it comes to Mustangs, Ford Motor Company makes special editions “happen” because of America's ongoing love affair with its favorite sporty car – Mustang. After the rebirth of the Mustang and Mustang GT for 2005, the Pony Package for 2006, plus the Shelby GT500 and now the California Special for 2007, Mustang excitement continues unbridled for yet another model year. And if Mustang’s storied past is any indication, you can expect even more special breeds in the future.

scion.pngA partial photo of the 2007 Scion Fuse Concept has appeared today on a Scion message board. It's not know if the photo was accidentally leaked or just a teaser planted by Scion to get some hype.

Either way the Fuse looks to be pretty interesting, insiders have hinted at a short nose, chopped roof, and turn signals built into the wheels.

Fuel Cell-Powered Police Car

Mercedes F-Cell
mercedes.pngDaimlerChrysler has introduced the first fuel cell–powered police vehicle to the world. The Wayne State University Police Department in Detroit will operate the Mercedes F-Cell as a supervisor's vehicle on and in the immediate vicinity of the campus, located in Detroit's Cultural Center.

Outfitted with a third-generation police radio, decals, lights and sirens, the Wayne State University Police Department F-Cell is a look into the future use of fuel cell vehicles. The demanding operation of a police car will produce valuable data to help develop fuel cell technology.

The Wayne State Police Department F-Cell vehicle will be refueled at NextEnergy's new hydrogen fueling station. The car will serve as a learning laboratory for students in WSU College of Engineering Alternative Energy Technology, the nation's first master’s-degree program in alternative energy.

Mercedes F-Cell
DaimlerChrysler has spent more than $1 billion in fuel cell vehicle research and development. No other manufacturer has accumulated more data or driven more zero-emissions miles — more than 1.2 million.

The DaimlerChrysler fuel cell vehicle fleet is diverse — in addition to several research vehicles, it also includes medium-duty fuel cell Dodge Sprinter vans and more than 35 Mercedes-Benz Citaro fuel cell buses, which operate in Europe, the United States, Japan, Australia and Singapore. As part of the world's largest fleet of fuel cell vehicles, DaimlerChrysler has more than 25 fuel cell vehicles in customer hands in California and more than 100 around the world. No other manufacturer comes close to the efforts of DaimlerChrysler with fuel cell technology.

The Mercedes F-Cell is a reflection of DaimlerChrysler's leadership in fuel cell technology. The entire fuel cell system is housed in the floor of the vehicle, leaving full use of the passenger and cargo spaces. It has a range of approximately 100 miles and a top speed of 85 mph. The electric motor develops 88 hp (65 kW), enabling acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 16 seconds. The stack has been developed by the DaimlerChrysler cooperation partner, Ballard Power Systems.

DaimlerChrysler supports Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's efforts and goals. His California Hydrogen Highway Network — in addition to other programs the company is involved with, including those with the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency — enables DaimlerChrysler and its partners to gain extensive operational familiarity with fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen refueling stations.

DaimlerChrysler pioneered fuel cell vehicle technology more than a decade ago. Fuel cells release energy from the reaction of hydrogen with a catalyst and oxygen. This clean technology operates at a high level of efficiency and is true zero-emissions. Hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles emit only pure water vapor as exhaust. Fuel cell vehicles are part of DaimlerChrysler's advanced propulsion technology umbrella, which includes efficient gasoline engines, advanced diesels, Flex-Fuel and hybrid power-train systems.

The New Audi TT has Arrived

New Audi TT
Audi.pngThe day has finally arrived for the new Audi TT to be released to the world. The second generation of this iconic coupe looks to make as big of a splash as it's older brother did when it took the sports coupe segment by storm when it was launched in 1998.

Audi has a lot riding on this new TT, with a loyal customer base and a mark set very high for quality and driving fun Audi is well aware that mistakes can't be made with the winning formula they've created for the TT. Audi promises that the new TT Coupe is even more dynamic than its predecessor- in terms of design, drivetrain, and running gear.

It was known that the TT would grow in size but no one was quite sure how much. Many have fear that changing the size of the TT could disrupt its mystique. It turns out that the TT hasn't grown by much being stretched by 5.4 in. to 164.5 in. and growing 3.1 in. wider then the original TT to 75.2 in. The car isn't all that much larger but Audi claims the new TT is much easier to enter and exit and provides much more luggage capacity with a full 10.2 cu. ft. in the boot. Folding down the rear seats will increase the carrying capacity to 24.7 cu. ft.

Follow the jump for the full review, press, release and many more photos of the new Audi TT Coupe...

New Audi TT
The body will be constructed of both aluminium and steel marking the first time that these materials have been combined alongside of each other by Audi. With 69 percent of the body's superstructure being made of aluminium the TT will be extremely rigid yet lightweight. To help generate downforce a spoiler will automatically extend from the tailgate when the car exceeds 75 mph. The original TT Coupe had problems with not generating enough downforce, Audi ended up adding spoilers to later models.

Two engine choices will initially be available the 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder TFSI motor featuring FSI direct injection will develop 200 hp. Mated to a six-speed gearbox the TT will reach 62 mph in 6.4 seconds and a top speed of 150 mph. The larger engine choice is the naturally aspirated 3.2L V6 developing 250 hp. Equipped with the six-speed gearbox 62 mph will be achieved in a scant 5.7 seconds and will be limited to a top speed of 155 mph.

Standard running gear for the TT is a six-speed manual but Audi's new dynamic S tronic dual-clutch gearbox is optional with both motors. The biggest choice might be whether or not to opt for Audi's infamous quattro all wheel drive system. The four-cylinder comes with only front wheel drive where as the V6 model will feature the quattro system.
New Audi TT
Audi has equipped the new TT with a multitude of technologies including dynamic suspension, multi-link rear suspension, and the high-tech Audi magnetic ride damper system. Standard features of the new Audi TT include air conditioning, sport steering wheel, and aluminum trim package.

Overall the new TT looks to be a worthy predecessor to the original car but only time will tell if this TT can be as good or even better then the first generation.

Audi Press Release -

BERLIN, Germany - A cult car, an icon – the Audi TT, launched in the autumn of 1998 – took the sports coupe segment by storm and sharpened the brand profile. Now the second generation of this successful model is making its debut. The new TT Coupe is even more dynamic than its predecessor– in terms of its design, its drivetrain, and its running gear.

The very architecture of the new Audi TT Coupe embodies the style, stability and power of a pure driving machine. The bullish stance of the base body and the low, narrow styling of the greenhouse together form a sculpture of simple, unfussy lines. The Audi design team has lovingly adopted and enhanced the visual code – the motif of circles and domes – of the predecessor model. The new TT appears more stretched, and even at a standstill seems to be striving to move forward; taut panels emphasise the impression of dynamic movement. The new TT is 5.4 in. longer than its predecessor at 164.5 in., and 3.1 in. wider at 75.2 in.

The body is constructed in the ASF Space Frame design developed by Audi and consists of aluminium and steel. This is the first time that it has combined different materials alongside each other. 69 percent of the superstructure is made of aluminium. The steel components making up the remaining 31 percent are to be found at the rear end, so as to ensure balanced distribution of the axle loads. To improve downforce, a spoiler is extended from the tailgate when the vehicle reaches a speed of 75 mph.

The new Audi TT, like its predecessor, is initially available as a 2 + 2-seater coupe; the separate roadster model is scheduled for later launch. The basic luggage capacity of the easily accessible boot, under its large-format lid, is an estimated 10.2 cu. ft. This capacity can be increased to an estimated 24.7 cu. Ft. by folding down the rear seat backs. The sports seats provide outstanding side restraint. There is a choice of three different leathers for the covers.

The cockpit is oriented strictly to the driver and is perfectly ergonomic in design. It embodies the classic circles motif of the TT in a number of ways, such as in the three centre air vents.

Two powerful petrol engines are available to power the car. The 2.0l turbocharged four-cylinder TFSI unit featuring FSI direct injection develops 200 hp. With a six-speed manual gearbox, it accelerates the TT to 62 mph in just 6.4 seconds, reaching a top speed of 150 mph. The sonorous-sounding, naturally aspirated 3.2-litre V6 engine develops 250 hp, accelerating from zero to 62 mph in 5.7 seconds and reaching a top speed of 155 mph (electronically governed).

Both engines are equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox. On request they can be combined with the dynamic S tronic dual-clutch gearbox. Whereas the four-cylinder engine comes with front-wheel drive, the V6 distributes its power across both axles by way of the quattro permanent four-wheel drive system – an exclusive technology feature in the sports coupe segment.

The Audi dynamic suspension was newly developed and tuned for the TT Coupe. One of its hallmarks is its self-steering behaviour right up to the handling limits, which ranges from neutral to light understeer. This sporty orientation produces driving fun, agility and supreme handling characteristics.

The track enlargement, with larger wheels ranging from 16 to 19 inches in size, and extensive changes in the area of elastokinematics were key areas of the developers’ work. The new multi-link rear suspension ensures optimum driving dynamics at a sports car level.

The high-tech Audi magnetic ride damper system is available as an option. In this system, tiny magnetic particles circulate in the oil inside the shock absorbers. When a voltage is applied to them, they alter the damping characteristics within milliseconds. This adaptive system simultaneously ensures high levels of ride comfort and thoroughly sporty dynamism, according to the specific driving scenario and the preferences of the driver.

The standard features of the new Audi TT include an automatic air conditioning system and a flat-bottomed sports steering wheel. The latter is not only entirely suitable for the sports car but also makes it easier to get in and out. The air vents, steering wheel spokes and many of the controls are finished in an aluminium look.

With regard to options, customers can choose from a variety of high-tech solutions, including the adaptive light dynamic cornering light system and the Audi parking system which aids parking.

The new TT marks the premiere of a new generation of audio systems. It is characterised by state-of-the-art reception and playback technology and intuitive user control. Six so-called softkeys control a variety of functions depending on which menu is selected. The chorus radio system with single CD drive comes as standard. A Bluetooth interface is available for mobile phones. The telephone function can be operated via the MMI, the multifunction steering wheel and by speech control. The operator control for the optional navigation system takes its cues from the exemplary MMI system familiar from the Audi A6, A8 and Q7 model series.

New Volkswagen Polo GTI

Volkswagen Polo GTI
vw.pngVolkswagen is about to launch the all-new Polo GTI which will be the most powerful version of the car ever produced in it's 30 year history. Featuring a 150hp version of the venerable 1.8-litre five-valve four-cylinder the Polo will be able to reach a top speed of 216km/h.

Featuring a unique GTI exterior and interior this Polo will stand out from the crowd with it's roof spoiler, black honeycomb mesh front grill, 16-inch alloy wheels, and red disc brake calipers. The interior has unique checked "Interlagos" pattern, sport steering wheel, and metal surfaces.

Read on for the full press release and photos....

Volkswagen Polo GTI
Wolfsburg, 03 April 2006 - The new Polo GTI is about to be launched. Delivering 110kW/150hp, it is the most powerful Polo since the series was introduced over 30 years ago. The exterior and interior concept of this potent super mini is deliberately true to the legendary Golf GTI. The Polo GTI will be launched on the first markets this spring.

The GTI label is one of the most famous in the automobile world. The last Polo GTI made its debut in 1998. It delivered 125hp and reached a top speed of 205km/h. In the latest version, 150hp allows a top speed of exactly 216km/h. The other key data for the new Polo GTI is as follows:
0 to 100km/h in 8.2 seconds, a maximum torque of 220Nm (at 1,950rpm) and an average consumption of 7.8 litres. The tradition of sporty top of the range Polos is incidentally twenty years old: It began in 1986 with 115hp in the Polo G40.
Volkswagen Polo GTI
Like the Golf GTI, the new Polo GTI also has a turbo-charged engine with intercooler. The GTI badge does, of course, demand the appropriate torque development. In the Polo GTI, a 1.8-litre five-valve four-cylinder provides powerful acceleration at low revs and top elasticity values. The Polo GTI needs just 7.5 seconds to jump from 80 to 120km/h in fourth gear.

The Polo GTI is a thoroughly sporty and safe car with impressive driving properties plus a special GTI exterior and interior. If we take the exterior, for example: At the front, this “little” GTI features the typical radiator grille styling of the “big” GTI – black, V-shaped and with an upper air intake in honeycomb mesh. The double headlights are also framed in black as are the standard fog lights in the outer air intakes. A very prominent roof spoiler (with integrated third brake light) has been placed above the tailgate providing ideal downforce on the rear axle. Further down you will notice the chrome twin exhaust tail pipes.
Volkswagen Polo GTI
It is no secret that black, silver or red paintwork goes best with the GTI styling. The front and rear brake callipers on the mighty disc brakes are also red. The 16-inch alloy wheels in the style of the Golf GTI with their five U-shaped openings have the effect of a stroboscope. They even clearly display the callipers at high speed on the road. The tyre size is 205/45 R 16. The tyres reach deep inside the wheel arches. The sports chassis (with standard ESP) is 15 millimetres lower than the standard version. Black side skirting underlines the dynamic chassis configuration.

As is the tradition, the new Polo GTI features special sports seats with the typical checked “Interlagos” pattern. The sports steering wheel, gearstick knob and gaiter as well as the handbrake grip are leather. A metal-like surface enhances the look and feel of the centre console and panels around the side air vents in the cockpit. Features like red cross stitching inside the steering wheel and the red edges of the black seat belts, show the great attention to the finest of details. This also applies to the metal embossed shift pattern on the gearstick knob and to the aluminium pedals.
Volkswagen Polo GTI
Fully-equipped GTI: Nothing has been sacrificed for the sake of sportiness in the Polo GTI. The controls are well-organised as usual, the quality is excellent, the cargo space is large (270 to 1,030 litres) and the rear bench is flexible (folding bench and backrest split 1/3 to 2/3). The proven body plus the front and side airbags ensure a reassuring level of passive safety — the front passenger airbag can be deactivated.

First Official photos of Range Rover Sport HST

Range Rover HST
Although the Range Rover HST made it's first debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed a week ago Range Rover has just released the offical photos and press release for the HST.

Not know for concept cars or really anything to wild the HST could point to a new direction for the Land Rover group. The HST is based on the Range Stormer the first ever concept vehicle for Land Rover, based on the Range Rover Sport truck the HST will be based on the Supercharged specification. It will feature extras such as electric sunroof, active locking differential and a unique oak interior.

The HST also gets a unique body with more trim front and rear bumpers and larger front grille. The doors and boot (trunk) are body colored which according to Land Rover press release makes the 'body sides appear deeper, accentuating the vehicles road-hugging qualities'. The most striking feature of the HST has to be the 20 inch 'Stormer' alloy wheels that match the chromed side vents and mirrors.

Read on for more photos and the full press relase....

Range Rover HST
Gaydon, Warwickshire, 28 March 2006 - The Range Rover Sport, the most dynamic Land Rover ever, now gets an even more exciting look of the new flagship, Supercharged 'HST' specification.

Having received its UK debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed Press Launch for 2006, the HST adds a host of additional equipment along with dramatic design cues inspired by the Range Stormer concept car, first shown at the Detroit auto show in January 2004.

"The HST allows a Range Rover Sport customer to drive the closest thing there is to the radical Range Stormer, our first ever concept vehicle and a real milestone for the company," says Land Rover UK managing director, John Edwards.

The new HST will be based on the Supercharged specification with the additional equipment including: electric sunroof, an electronic active locking rear differential and privacy glass. The interior is distinguished by a unique hand polished lined oak trim.

The exterior design is the work of the same Land Rover team that created the original Range Stormer. It includes new flush-fitting front and rear bumpers and a new larger open-mouth grille. The front lower air intake is deeper and new front fog lamps are mounted in the spoiler.

The lower doors and lower rear boot are body-coloured, making the body sides appear deeper, accentuating the vehicles road-hugging qualities. A new tail spoiler is also fitted, and the special rectangular tail-pipes are close to those used on the original Range Stormer concept vehicle.

Further visual impact is provided by the 20inch 'Stormer' alloy wheels, chromed aluminium side vents and body-coloured door mirror cappings, unique to this derivative.

"The HST gives the Range Rover Sport an especially impressive stance, hunkered down tight to the road," says Land Rover design director, Geoff Upex. "It's the extreme version of the Range Rover Sport, the design that will be chosen by those who want to stand out from the crowd."

The HST is available in five colours; Bonatti Grey, Cairns Blue, Java Black, Rimini Red and Zermatt Silver. Performance figures are the same as the standard Supercharged model.

As a Land Rover, the HST will naturally still have off-road capability. The removable chin spoiler means that approach and departure angles are as good as the standard vehicle.

"The Range Rover Sport continues to be a major success for Land Rover, with strong order banks in most markets," says John Edwards. "It appeals not only to those who want a dynamic 4x4 but also to customers who want comfort and refinement. That's why we call it a Sports Tourer. Customers are coming not just from competitor 4x4s but also from premium saloons. They value the extra all-round command driving and breadth of capability that only a Land Rover can offer."

The Range Rover Sport HST is now on sale from £63,000 on the road. For more information contact your local Land Rover dealership or visit www.landrover.co.uk

New Audi R8 Production Car Photos

Audi R8
Audi.pngFourtitude has caught some great new photos of the new Audi R8 production car going through testing at Nurburging, late last week. Two different R8's were actually spied one wearing a matte black finish with fashionable white polka dot's and the other in a light silver blue much like the Le Mans concept car's color.

From the looks of the photos the Audi R8 looks to have changed very little from the original Le Mans concept car. Fourtitude points out the following -

The most apparent differences can be seen at the front, where the concept's LED headlights give way to projector style headlights containing what appears to be amber turn signals mounted inboard from the main Xenon headlight projector. Much of the headlights have been disguised on both mules, though the headlight design appears to maintain a similar shape to the concept - not as rounded at points closest to the grille, and more straight along the bottom edges.

Make the jump over to Fortitude to get the rest of the details about the all-new Audi R8.

Wash Your Car Like a Pro

Car Wash
Spring is here and it's time to give your vehicle a good cleaning. Here are a few tips to help you get some professional results. If you've got any tips make sure to post a comment!

1. Use the correct soap - don't make the mistake of using dishwashing or laundry soap they can take the wax off your car or even permanently damage the finish of your vehicle. Use a car washing soap from a reputable manufacture, they are designed to remove automotive dirt and grime and will not harm your paint.

2. Use a clean car washing sponge or 100% terry cloth towel to wash the car. Don't use a sponge designed for doing the dishes, they can have scrubbing pads that can scratch the paint. Only use these sponges / towels for cleaning your vehicles that way no other chemicals or objects that can harm the finish will be in contact with them.

3. Park your vehicle in a shaded location before getting started. Washing your car in the sun can cause some surfaces to dry faster than you may want them to, leaving residue and unwanted streaks.

4. Be sure to rinse off the car completely to remove as much dirt as possible before applying the soap with your sponge, towel, or wash mitt.

5. Car care professionals recommend washing the vehicle beginning with the top and working to the bottom, one section at a time, although some enthusiasts are adamant that beginning with the lower sections is a better method. Which ever method you choose just make sure to never place your washing tool (towel / sponge) on the ground. Do so can pick up rocks or dirt that can scratch your car.

"Washing your vehicle from the top down reduces the chance of scratching the finish" advises Mark Greene, executive vice president of Griot's Garage. "By washing from the top down, and frequently rinsing your wash mitt, sponge or brush, you greatly reduce the possibility of contaminants becoming embedded in your cleaning tools and creating scratches and swirl marks."

6. Use a dedicated sponge or towel to wash your wheels and tires. Your wheels tend to be the dirtiest part of your car and it's where corrosive brake dust accumulates. Using a different sponge, towel, or brush will help stop you from spreading all of this grime to the rest of your car.

7. After the final rinse, wipe the excess water from the vehicle surface to prevent water spotting. A soft terry cloth towel or a high-quality chamois are recommended. Keep the towel or chamois clean to help prevent scratching, and wipe the vehicle lightly to soak up water without abrading the surface.

If you live in a climate where sand or salt is used on the road surface, be sure to rinse inside the wheel wells, paying special attention to the lower part of the fender where salt and sand may have accumulated. You might want to take a trip to a self-service car wash and use the high-pressure hose for this extra step.

8. Make sure to try your car immediately with towels that are to prevent spotting. Don't forget to dry inside of all the door jams, hood, and trunk lid.

Lotus Unveils Elise based Pickup Truck!

Lotus Lugga
lotus.pngOffical Lotus Press Release - Lotus announce first Elise-based pickup

Lotus Cars is delighted to announce that its first light commercial
vehicle rolls off the production line today.

The Lotus Elise 'Load Lugga' is an Elise-derived flatbed that seeks
to secure a slice of the ever-growing worldwide market for sportscar-derived
pickup trucks.

Utilising a Briggs and Stratton pull-start diesel engine, uniquely
supercharged by Lotus's own engineers, the Elise 'Load Lugga' is the first
Lotus to marry advanced 4-wheel drive technology with the Lotus design
philosophy of 'performance through lightweight'. A useful 5kg payload,
together with an optional towing hitch offering a further 10kg of
load-hauling capacity, ensures the new Lotus will be equally at home
carrying a small bag of sugar as an expanded polystyrene surfboard.

With carbon fibre roof rails and perforated aluminium bull bars
ensuring the new Elise derivative looks the part without compromising
performance, hopes are high that 0-60mph acceleration is less than 3
seconds, and will have flatbed fans reaching for their chequebooks.

An active payload management system, linked to the engine's oil
pressure control module, optimises ride and handling round even the sharpest
bend, while big chunky tyres increase ground clearance to an
all-terrain-conquering 4 inches.

Trevor Houghton-Berry, Lotus Head of Commercial Operations looked to
the future 'The Elise 'Load Lugga' is our first move into the lucrative LCV
market and certainly lives up to the Lotus philosophy of 'change the rules'.
We like trucking and we like to truck!'

Mark O'Shaughnessy, Lotus USA Sales and Marketing Director
commented, 'We can no longer ignore Lotus's big opportunity in the pickup
market - we want a slice of the action and are gunning for a 0.0026% market
share this year and 0.0027% next. The Elise 'Load Lugga' will be known as
the F1.50 stateside and we are set to take the market by storm. 200 Lotus
Elise F1.50's in the first year? Bring them on.........'
